Wasted potential in former players

Some greaat names there guys, Jacin Sinclair - yeah he could do anything on his day. I remember him destroying Brisbane from 5/8 one day at Lang Park and the Tigers still lost I think.

David Woods was a favourite of mine. Of all the youngsters that followed in the footsteps of the gloriously talented Sterling/Kenny/Ella/Grothe era, the likes of Crnkovic (sp), Penna, Bell and so on, he was the only one that I thought could have held his head up in that company. Absolutely electric.

Papworth looked like a freak but a shocking injury run prevented us seeing the best of him. A will-of-the-wisp 5/8.

Good call on Mundine too. He could have been anything but the only thing bigger than his talent was his ego and that prevented him having the chance to actually match the feats of Daley and Fittler instead of just talking about it.

I'll throw up two smokies from the 80s - Mark Ross and Todd Riley. I was only a young man watching ABC on a Saturday afternoon in Mount Isa but it seemed that Ross, a young Bunnies winger had unbelieveable skills that he only rarely used. I remember him scoring one wonderful try from deep in his own half with every skill in the book and some other you just can't coach. Anyone remember him and able to tell me why he never went on with it?

Todd Riley was a young fullback for Easts who had the cheek to field a kick-off against Penrith I think in the early 80s, run it back to the defence, chip over the top, regather and score. He only played about half a season in the top grade and was streeting the Rookie of the Year title when he disappeared off the face of the earth. I searched RLW for years afterwards trying to find out what had happened to him, finally saw a reference to him playing bush football somewhere in NSW. Again, loooked an absolute worldbeater, anyone know why he left all of a sudden?

And one more I just thought of, Les Kiss, the Bundy Bullet. A brilliant winger with sublime pace, skills and football smarts (rare amongst wingers), cruelled by a broken leg on the 86 Roo Tour. My mate and I followed Valleys everywhere in teh Brisbane comp in 86 and 87. Bennett King (current West Indies and ex-Qld cricket coach) and was the next big thing on the wing. One day at Neumann oval, we were watching the reserves when Les Kiss, who was just a kid at the time, chipped and regathered, turned the fullback inside out and streaked away to score. My mate laughed about what a fluke it was when the fellas in front of us turned round and glared at us. Mark Hohn and Steve Day, the Diehards' second row at the time and high on our then list of heroes/gods. My mate pulled his head in pretty quickly, apparently they'd seen him playing 2nds and knew how good he was going to be and were none too happy at us bagging him.

Owen Craigie - another skilled player who did some great things. Seemed to spend more time eating than training
Absolutely, made his 1st grade debut at 17 (i think), and was a pivotal part of the knights 97 premiership side and was lauded by many as the next Mal meninga, and I think he had the potential to be mentioned in the same sentence but he got fat and that was the end of him. I still remember one of his last performances he had for the knights. Was listed to play reserve grade but was a last minute replacement for someone who got injured and was shuffled to fullback with number 19 on his back and was man of the match, scored a great chip and chase solo try that rivalled Billy Slater's effort.

Mclinden got screwed around by Meninga who played him in just about every position from 1 to 7. He had an awesome rookie year picking up rookie of the year and a MOTM against the broncos, did okay in 2003 other than that he was too inconsistent.

Ali Lauiti'iti. Sure he reached his potential for one season (2002) but was never really given the chance to regain his form after coming back from illness before the Warriors offloaded him to the ESL where he's now getting fat on the bench at Leeds. Classic case of a guy who'dve gone a lot further if he wasn't too nice and easygoing for his own good.

Had retired but was just about to take up coaching, had agreed to the Capt/coach possy at Byron in '86 when he died in the surf there. will never know how good a coach he woulda been, by all reports he was too nice a bloke.

Brandon Pearson/Costin

Drugs made him run away, change his name even, you can change names and locations but your problems still with ya.

Brad Meyers' problem was that after he made the Kangaroos oposition forwards started targetting him and suddenly he wasn't such the big shot when the heat was on him constantly.

I was gonna say Ali as well. He's still only 25 and I hope he plays a few more games from the Kiwis, but he's certainly an ex-NRL player. Most talented player I've ever seen bar none, like Sonny Bill but better. From 1998-2000 I didn't think he got a fair go from the coaches and fans, he was an absolutely unstoppable ball carrier but dropped the ball too much. Later on he got too caught up in the hype about his supposed ball playing talents and has forgotten how to run hard at the line. As close as you'll ever see to impossible to tackle when he really wants to run.

Leo Dynevor - the only man to ever fill Johns shoes.....;-) Should have done more at Wests.

I used to really like watching him play, last I heard he was playing in the local Newcastle comp and somewhat tearing it up.

Two New Zealanders

1, Dave Watson - could have been a legend. Played at Cronulla and the Crushers as well as a few UK clubs and of course the Kiwis. Liked the good things in life too much.

2, Tony Tatupu - a very good 2nd rower who could have been one of the best. Now a copper in Auckland.

I remember reading that John Doyle had issues with either asthma or CFS which severely affected his ability to do anything active for extended periods. He had a lot of talent though didn't he, I've watched the Origin match he played in a few times and he really was superb.

This guy was going to be an immortal until that idiot Brian Smith let him go.

Ali recently scored 5 tries in 1 match not bad for a "fat bench warmer"

Not really a former player but the day he retires Steve Witt will be the captain/coach/CEO of this team.
