Hardly seems necessary. I had no idea about the comic prior to seeing it, either.
I first learnt about it when I saw the trailer for the first time towards the end of last year. Bought the comic in January, and it was one of the most epic books I've ever read. Glad I read it before I saw it too, as I was able to pick up on so much more that had I not known the source material

I have the print version of the graphic novel as well as an awesome motion comic that Warner Bros put out last year.

It's the comic slightly animated (movement, but not changed artistically) with voice over. It's really quite awesome.

Ok- for those who have no idea about anything Watchmen....

1) Read the comic. Its epic.
It was never an ongoing series or anything, just a series of about 12.

2) Its set in an alternate 1985.
Some things are different some things are the same

3) 'Superheroes' exist in the world of Watchmen.
But only one has superpowers. The rest are all Batman-ish vigilanties.

4) Alot of it revolves around the cold war.
You dont have to know alot about the war itself, but a general understanding helps.

5) Yes theres a big blue penis.
Though its not that prominent, and/or frequent

6) If you havent read the comic you wont get the 'full' experience.
On the DVD they will include the animated 'Tales of the Black Freighter' and the tv show that interviews Hollis Mason about his book 'Under the Hood'
The 'missing' bits dont have a huge bearing on the story, but renforce the themes and attitudes throughout.

7) Yeah the movie differs a little from the comic.
But I think the message is still the same, and the changes are minor in comparrison to the over all themes.

8) Its pretty heavy and serious.
Its not spiderman or iron man. Its not even Dark Knight. Its heavy.

9) Theres not that much action to speak of.
Because if you remember the movie is set in 1985 and the 'Keane Act' (from the comic) was a law passed in 1977 (I believe) outlawing vigilantism. Therefore most of the characters are 'retired'

10) Read the comic.
If you like comics in general, youll love this. Especially if youre up for a heavy dose of awesomeness.
No, as a rule I dont like DC comics. But this little series is the pinnacle of comics.
No I dont have a hard on for this comic or anything. Its just that it is so much different from the usual comics I read.
I think the movie does it justice. Some songs in the movie I thought were a bit overdone (ie Simon and Garfunkle) but others were used subtley and to perfection (ie Tears for Fears)

I hope I havent given anything away.
Go read
Go see

Its good!

I liked it, although maybe they could of cut out around 20 to 40 minutes worth of time, but hey i'm not complaining. It's like a more wittier smarter version of X-men with a bit of blue penis thrown in.
