Inglorious exit
Wayne Bennett won’t say it publicly but he believes there were key figures at Newcastle who failed to buy into his plans. Knights insiders point the finger at Matt Gidley and even Kurt Gidley. The coach also felt dudded by the club’s failure to deliver on promised facilities and buying power. That said, it is hard to fathom how Bennett can feel comfortable leaving the Knights the way that he has. His time there can only be described as an abject failure. The only thing he deserves praise for is his magnificent support for Alex McKinnon. To make things worse, the club now has to rebuild with a worn-out playing group under a coach who won’t have the gravitas of Bennett. And he is entering a mixed playing group at the Broncos. Some players will welcome him, but outgoing coach Anthony Griffin has his supporters among the playing group. Bennett always maintained that he would not go to a club which had a coach in place. His hurried negotiations last Sunday broke that rule. Griffin’s camp found out on Sunday that Bennett had been telling directors he would prefer to head home and Griffin was left with that news as he was coming off arguably his best coaching effort of the season. His class was a stark contrast to the way Bennett handled his exit from the Knights.

Interesting if true, who knows. Why wouldn't the Gids buy in, Mids was only there because of Tinks and Bennett.

^ Pretty sure the info in that article is complete bull. Bennett always speaks very highly of Midley.

My guess is despite the boys being bitterly disappointed Wayne is leaving they understand and accept his reasons for going. the media can't get abad word about Wayne out of anyone so they make shit up. Notice these articles always mention a captain who is disgruntled. Garbage. All of it. Time they realise that Newcastle don't do personal vendettas and when we do get rid of someone we do it professionally and after the facts are clear as day.

What are your thoughts on Sheens guys? My point being that I am nervous about our prospects of retaining the kids like Sione, Chanel and Mamo long term with player agents using the rookie coach argument to drive them elsewhere. Add Bennett's infamous player influence and it means anything is possible. When you read that Josh Hoffman and Barba are fair chances of being sacked by bennett it does make me wonder. It has happened before. You need an old head who can counter why money is not the only consideration. We are talking impressionable teenage players here. Short term Sheens could be the answer to keeping them and with his standing in the game we would certainly have a better argument.
