Wayne Bennett and future coach talk

So Garth Brennen has pulled out of the race after a heart to heart with Phil Gould. Classic Gould sticking the knife in Newcastle's belly.

Brennen actually sounded rather disappointed in the article.

Either all I firmly believe it should be Stone who is our coach. He has been extremely loyal and got a very poor team to make the finals and play an attractive brand of football. He's got my vote... If that counted for anything. Ha.

So Gus, who encouraged him to apply to begin with, encourages him to pull out right when it became apparent he was favourite for the job? Effectively costing him a FG coaching role?

The whole "it's not the job it's the time" thing makes you think. Does everyone in the NRL really think we're in such bad shape and we'd be a career killer? Is that what Gus told him? Maybe I'm just using blind optimism but I think we have the nucleus of a very good squad. Sure we need some props badly but we don't need superstars, just some people capable of grabbing it and running. The new coach will have a wealth of cap space and junior talent to do that and build whatever squad they'd like. We've also won 4/5 lately so I hope people aren't believing Bennett and thinking we're a lost cause.

Oh well, despite the fact I thought Brennan could have been a great coach for us, I was never completely sold. I've heard things from former players of his and things from a family member who worked with him in the police dept so we might have dodged a bullet there.

Out of those left I hope Stone gets it. I wasn't a fan of him getting the job earlier but I think he'd be a better option than most of the others named.

I think the fact the decision has been drawn out added to him pulling out.

I was originally all for Stone, then I was starting to root for Brennan, back to Stoney now I think. Just hope it's decided soon.

So why are Barrett and Fairleigh apparently in the picture to secure the coaching position when they were the two guys sitting either side of Cleary in the coach's box last night? Aren't they part of Penrith's five-year plan as well?

It shits me that Gould basically said that he convinced Brennan to stay because Newcastle were taking too long to appoint the position and he couldn't afford to wait for them to make a decision. One week for Gidley and co. to decide how experienced they want the coach to be. Another week to place the candidates into inexperienced, emerging or experienced categories. And now another week or two to finally getting around to interview them. All this time wasting when, let's be honest, Stone's appointment to the position has basically been a foregone conclusion since Bennett announced he was leaving.

They have to get this decision right. I don't care how long it takes. Brennan I feel was of the view he was never going to get the job. If all this was to reappoint Stone it is par for the course for this club. Only we could take this long to give a bloke already here the job.

lol There is some serious conclusion jumping going on in here

Gus has every right to look after his club and keep the best staff there.

Oh the only reason I said it is because he fully endorsed Garth for the job a couple weeks ago and now he says is best interest is to stay with them. Just classic Gould double siding. But you are also right he's doing g his job by keeping a talent like Garth at that club. But. You know. Screw him;) :p

Yep. Bit of a farce if it takes all this time only for Stone to be given the nod.

What's your point? You want me to name the people who apparently applied for the job?

I'm simply asking if you know who the applicants are for the coaching job. No point made as yet.

Um ok. I guess just the people we've all heard. Stone, Brennan etc. There's a lot more names being thrown around of course but we don't have any way of knowing if they've officially applied or not (well I haven't read anything about that).
