Our position on the ladder is tenous and we don't "scare" many clubs. In fact most expect us to be the ones to drop out of the 8 before the season ends.

Souths have a tradition of being a winning club - 20 premierships. We are seen as the perennial losers.

Souths are providing opportunity to their juniors, Gordon, Moran, Young to name a few. Our juniors fade away and rot or leave.

Souths have more money to spend than we do.

You only have to take in what goes on around us. Commentors bag us, rep selectors ignore us, journos rarely rate us, the wider league public cast a constant stream of derision at us year after year.

Sorry to be so unfluffy, but we are not rated and have little respect and until we become a club players are knocking on the door at to play for the song will remain the same. Only winning the comp will do that and I doubt very much if the 2005 Sharks are going to be the ones to bring home the bacon.

Having said all that, I believe we have at least one big name signing with a foot in the door, and yes, we'll be paying well over market value to get him.

I doubt there will be any announcements till mid July. There's a game to be played about being seen to do the right thing. If you make announcements just 3 days after the deadline, especially as July 2 and 3 is a weekend, it gives a bit of a sus look to it all

Unless the player is a free agent or has permission to negotiate that is.

Also nobody "signs" before June 30. That would be suicide as there are witnesses that might talk later if things go skewiff or relationships sour. Players may agree to terms but they won't sign the contract. It often all comes undone in the interim time. Sironen was one. Mason 2 years ago was another.

Some clubs are not the kind of clubs players line up to sign with, some are.

The panthers are alot like us, despite their GF win, they still are not an attractive side to sign with , why ? hard to say, they pay their players, no financial problems, no risks, they are just not seen as a glamour club the way the broncos and roosters are.

We are traditionally a club that does not sign big names, does not buy premierships. I for one like it that way, but that romantic view also depends on the nurturing and retention of quality juniors as sparrow correctly points out.

8 hour contracts and the like.
I do know that come midnight contracts are offered & if they are not excepted in the time frame, the club moves onto target 2. That is why some contracts/offers last hours.
A mate of mine buys his houses that way.
In the last week he has put offers in for houses well over the million mark. He tells the real estate agents(low form of life) they have 8 hours or offer withdrawn. Sure enough they dont take him seriously & come back with a counter offer. He says bye bye. then 2 days later they ring up saying OK they will take the offer. He says too late, f*ck off.
if only he could talk to the owners instead of dealing through slime buckets.

A tad silly though, it's a good plan right up until he tells them to f*ck off once they get back to him with the price he felt the house was the right buy price at 2 days previously.....

Effective if your aim is to feel you have gained the higher ground on real estate agents ( admirable pastime as that might be ! ), un-effective if you aim is to buy houses your want for the price you feel they are worth !

I get your point sparrow I just dont know why those tragic f***s Manly dont have problems attracting big name players when over the last 5 years IMO we have performed on par if not better then that mob. Quite sad really

I do see your point though and agree strongly that it is a mentality that can be changed most effectively by winning the premiership.

I don't understand why players have such deep seeded hangs up about the club though. What could be better than being part of a team of premiership drought breakers? And who could argue with how good off-field life is in the Shire? Is there a better place to raise a young family? You've got great beaches, golf courses, schools, shopping, rivers for watercraft and plenty of national parks. I'd be lining up to sign here as opposed to backpacker infested Bondi or snooty Manly or that hole Parramatta.

Sharks still have to pay overs to get the players they want but that is the market. If we finish strong this season, buy some quality and play well next season things may change but the people who run our club don't have the best eye for value.

Guys, I really don't know. I agree with all your points. Spec K is right about Manly as well, they went well over for Kite and Kennedy but at least it's worked out well for them.

Whereas we went overs on Vagana and all things being equal I don't think we've seen real value for money there yet.

One thing though, I sometimes see the Shire lifstyle as a negative to the football team. Call it white collar vs blue collar if you like but if you look at the games history most really successful teams (over time) are from working class backgrounds.

I think this has more to do with the history of Rugby League. Generally it is because Union or Tennis that has flourished in affluent suburbs. Although there have been plenty of Premierships that have made their home in Bondi or Warringah.

Realistically I don't think the white-collar vs blue-collar thing has anything to do with why a player signs with a certain club (althougth I do think lifestyle is considered) or why some clubs have more premierships than others.
