Why did Wigan want to release him early then? Dont we need a class centre more than a winger?

Wigan are actually struggling big time this year. They are 8th out of 13 teams and were towelled 70-0 by Leeds last weekend. The bottom 2 sides will be relegated this year and they are only 3 points clear of 2nd last.

No point in signing him for a year. From what we are hearing about our prospects for next year I can't see anything special happening with our club, that is going to entice him to stay any longer.

yeah but if you are struggling for cash in 06 then why not take advantage of this. Alot of other clubs may have decided against taking him for one year which is why the Knights may be in the running. If you can pick up a quality player on the cheap even for a year you should.

This stinks of desperation - the same desperation that saw us throw way too much money at Reynoldson just because we had botched up the Tahu and BK negotiations and hadnt signed any quality replacements. How desperate is it really when we are EVEN CONSIDERING signing a player who has never played NRL who has decelared that he wants to use the club as transit lounge. Wakeup you fools (Conway and his ship of fools),you have much more to lose then you do to gain by signing Carney, irrespective how good a player he is, for just 1 year. You are right also Tony, at midnight on June 30th 2006, when the Knights were 0 and 14 AGAIN he will be talking to Scott sattler about where he is going to live on the Gold Coast.

I think mainly because next year, and the next couple of years we will be going through a re-building stage, signing a bloke for one year to take up a spot that one of our our junior players might fill doesn't fit with re-building. We have had too many stop gap methods applied here recently, and that's all signing Carney would be. Lets face it he aint gonna win us a premiership, and he aint gonna entice other players here. That all said, we have dug a hole here at the Knights that is going to be bloody hard to climb out of which ever way we go about it.

The way I see it is that at the end of 2006 you have your highest paid player in the club leaving along with what could be alot of others like Hall and Carmont. This to me will be your big restructure. So rather than wait for the same team to run around next year with the same results, do whatever you can to make this team competitive again in 06 and avoid what could be a 2nd wooden spoon. Carney is quality which is why the GC want him. If it meant that carney played first grade and carmont or hall were relegated back to reggies surely thats a good thing.

I realise it doesn't help the long term plans of the club but by the looks of things you guys are stuck with the current crop for 1 more year anyway.

As CWB said, perhaps he will stay stay longer. I guess it depends on how his first season goes.

I cant see him changing his mind if his deadset on the frame of mind to go there its a nice thought but why the hell would you come to the knights to stay!

I love how everyone says there's no point signing him to a one year deal when we did the exact same with Craig Smith (who isn't even in Carney's league) earlier this year. If Carney's presence helps us to better perform, and as a result of that, makes us a more appealing club to other players (as we've all said, nobody wants to play for us right now), then I say take it. We can't be too picky when we're trying not to win the spoon.

Yeah CWB and when he leaves where back where we started.

Craig Smith has been up there with the best props this year work wise...... So whats your point?

My point is that a player can make a big impact in a year. Smith's presence has given our forward pack the kind of starch it wouldn't have had this year in his absence. He's been a great leader for the pack. Carney brings a similar level of experience to the backline, and he'd lift the game of any back in his presence. Whilst he may only be on the field for a year, he'd still contribute a lot to developing our young backline talent.

And this is a simple winger we're talking about here.

It's not like he'll bolster out premiership hopes.

Christ, Newcastle will need more than a simple Irish bug winger to turn things around.

Hey, I would love for him to play for us.

But it just turns my stomach to think we would be his second choice - just keeping him warm until the GC started. That doesn't indicate DEDICATION to the place.

If he wants a one year deal, fair enough I guess... but at least have an option on him.

if he is definately going to sign for GC, then no - but if he seriously entertains staying here, then yes.

if your questioning your credibility of Weidler's comments on Carney, you may as well be questioning he's credibitily on his comment of the one year deal only. However, if a player plays with a club, wins a premiership, he is more than likely going to stay.

I'd prefer it if the Knights sign someone like Clint Greenshields for a 3 year contract rather than signing Carney for one year. We need to start looking for players whom we can rebuild the team around rather than opting for band-aid solutions.

It will be very hard for the club to sign a player like Greenshields in the first place. He is a hot propsect and has plenty of years ahead of him, but will a player of his calibre want to come to a club that is coming last and yet to post a win. The rebuilding stages cannot be done in one season, it will take numerous years for the club to return to its glory days. For now, we have to accept the fact that a player like Carney is even interested in the Knights.

Carney has spent a large chunk of this season and last out injured. He seems to crumple at the slightest knock. Not a good one year investment as I would expect him to miss half of that through injury.

The thing I'm afraid of is if we sign carney and we have to replace him again after only 1 year, he's not going to get us inot the finals on his lonesome, he might help push a team like Parra, atta over the line for a year but we're so far away from finals football its not funny.
