NRL expansion on as clubs sold on 17 teams

A plan to introduce a 17th NRL team from 2023 has been outlined to the chiefs of the existing 16 clubs in a meeting that has all but sealed the expansion deal.

I read on Foxsports, there were two clubs that were pissed off that there wasn't an increase given back to the clubs, greedy fkers, seriously 13m isn't enough to field a pro team, some 30 years ago clubs didn't get grants, geez i wanna find out who complained, and in what context... if its because covid has ruined that club financially for the moment, then fair enough, but if its the broncos and titans again.... ffs please

It won't be WA, it has to be an area, that an existing team/s are ready to be promoted, perth can barely field a jim beam cup team, (prior to pandemic that is)
It will be an area that is a league heartland, it always has been this way, (Melbourne was an anomaly) and Sa and Wa was not set up to win the way storm was....
Even though i see NZ2 being the focus, its more likely going to be PNG or QLD5 ..... or both Cairns/PNG Pride.... representing a nation of league crazy fans, cairns with the lion mascot, and soon to have a new stadium, direct rival to Townsvilles based cowboys, PNG, digicup pathways... it will be an easy adage as 18th club... and you know how the NRL and PVL love easy

Basically, yeah.

A shame, because red, white & silver/grey (the actual color of dolphins) would have worked fine.. even with black added to that mix.

Im fairly sure 18th is 2 years after the dolphins start up, they are pushing hard the idea that QLD need more and more representation, more players filtering thru to 1st grade, and pushing hard for the Maroons to be quality..
SoO is no good if QLD aren't competitive, its all about QLD, always has been... Nz2 will be the focus, but its only so that a decade from now no.20 is from NZ, promoting existing teams will be the only way towards gaining a license... so Perth and Adelaide will never see a license unless its ported there from sydney

In terms of new teams in and around Brisbane, the ONLY thing that matters is what Lachlan M. has agreed with PVL and Abdo. With Lachlan’s backing, you get the Broncos staying quiet, Fox Sports coming to the table with financial backing, and a positive media campaign from the dominant tabloid news chain actoss Australia.

We don’t know what they’ve agreed apart from an end to the Broncos exclusivity in Brisbane and funding from Fox Sports for the expansion. If the handshake with Lachlan is two new teams in the next five seasons, only one of which may use the name “Brisbane”, then PVL and co will obviously work within those bounds as they decide who comes in now and who follows next.

The clubs will always be against expansion because it's another competitor they have to contend with for players, sponsors and fans.

Lachlan Murdoch and the Donkeys might like having a third team in Brisbane by 2028 as it will stifle the development of Brisbane 2 and 3.

Ch9 might enjoy having a third Brisbane team. They broadcast three games a round for most of the season. Three teams allows them to fill most of their time slots with a Brisbane vs Sydney match up.

Also all of the pro sports in Australia are heavily reliant on the taxpayer… People in glass houses and all that.

I always put it down to laziness on the part of the marketing industry.

“We’ve already got a template for selling this plastic team name, why waste energy selling something unique and untested like Wombats or Cassowaries“.

Of course by that logic, we’d never end up with Rabbitohs, a brand recognised worldwide as synonymous with only one team, one place and one sport.

Yeh because the broncos choice has held them back lol. They are only the biggest rl club on the world. People put too much emphasis on if a logo/name makes or breaks a club imo. Success on and off the field is far more Important than what name you choose.
