... or will they go crazy and have everything from eye patches to to foam swords.

I'm afraid we'll all go crazy if we don't have eye patches and foam swords- AND BEARDS!!!

I think we'll end up bringing our own if they don't have official merchandise!

"Are we pirates or are we MUTHA-FAHKEN PIRATES???!!!"

...well something like that anyway. :D

The Raiders decided to go traditional (but have come close to going nuts with our merchandise once or twice) , but that didn't stop the fans (including myself on occasion) bringing our own viking helmets, drinking horns and the odd foam axe/sword and shield.

There is even a couple of friends of mine that dye their hair green for the season. Also a couple of blokes who have taken to dressing a skeleton in a Raiders jersey and bringing it along.

But still vikings are not as marketable as pirates are at the moment, so I would not be surprised if they went nuts with the merchandise early on, when the Pirates are still a novelty in Perth.

On the other side of the Indian ocean from Perth you have modern day pirates raping and murdering innocent people. I'm not sold on "Pirate" as a marketing tool.

That's very pedantic.

As Perth Red said "rabbits are a plague on most lands", and there are other examples like, worldwide storms kill thousands of people everyday, sharks, leopards/jaguars and tigers are all known man eaters, knights invaded and pillaged countries and murdered and raped innocent people in their time, vikings did the same as knights but also were slavers, every day all over the world warriors fight battles and St Gorge represents a religion that over the many years since its inception has committed millions of atrocities, some of which are by themselves worse then all the other examples put together! I am sure that if I thought about it that I could find examples for the other teams as well, in fact I bet I could demonize every mascot ever invented.

The point is that everything has a dark side, take knights for example everybody knows the knight in shining armor, and are willing to forget all the bad things (sometimes downright bloody evil things) for that fantasy of the knight in shining armor, and that is alright because the world is a darker place without heroes, and in many ways sometimes knights, sharks, panthers, tigers, vikings, rabbits and even pirates were heroes, and in many ways sometimes police, firemen, soldiers, etc. etc. were villains.

It's funny, the Rabbitohs moniker actually started as a slur against South Sydney supporters.

Gee whiz...here I was thinking the Pirates moniker was pretty cool.

Then some c*** had to come along and spoil it, just like all those melanoma ads whilst I'm watching the cricket.

If the names were up to you, we'd have the West Coast Fairies. Enough of the fake outrage over shit like this.

This is one of the single dumbest things i've read on LU, and that's a huge achievement. Congrats.

If someone had an idea to name the team "West Coast Terrorists" there would be outrage, because Terrorists are evil people. As are pirates. In my mind there is no difference between a Pirate and a Terrorist.

As for idiots bringing up rabbits being a pest. We're not the Rabbits. We're the Rabbitohs. People that caught and killed rabbits.

The equivalent would be calling them the "West Coast US Navy Seals".

Look, I'm not trolling. Personally I don't care what they call themselves. But if some suburban mum in WA is on the fence about getting her son in a sport she might think twice about covering her kid in Pirates gear and might go with the Glory or Force or Eagles or Dockers.

Smart post. You are getting a reputation of posting these type of post. I.e. making a lot of sense. Even if that reputation only stretches as far as myself.

As for idiots bringing up rabbits being a pest. We're not the Rabbits. We're the Rabbitohs. People that caught and killed rabbits.

OMG, you are worse than pest. You are evil, evil people who harm and kill animals. Animal cruelty is the worse of crimes.

Look, I'm not trolling. Personally I don't care what they call themselves. But if some suburban mum in WA is on the fence about getting her son in a sport she might think twice about covering her kid in Pirates gear and might go with the Glory or Force or Eagles or Dockers.

Can't argue with this. It is also the reason that many, many parents prevents their kids from dressing up as a Pirate for Halloween and Costume parties.

We don't need those pantywaist parents if they want to have that attitude. These are the people that suck the fun out of life. They'd make any noun or verb illegal if they could. I doubt many parents are boycotting the Wiggles for the same reason anyway; I hear they have a pirate and a flesh eating dinosaur!

By the way, Eagles peck out eyes, Force implies a collision and Dockers tend to hang out at seedy bars to meet other "Dockers".

I got it,maybe Bunniesman would be happy with the moniker, Perth Prancing Pirouettes and the players all wear a tutu. They would all have to speak with a lisp.:sarcasm:That will excite the mums, all wanting little Fonteroy to take up the sport.

Canberra Raiders (as in rape and pillage historically) will have to change their name to the Canberra Senators , fans all wearing Bob Carr masks.

Geez I have read some beauties in my lifetime, but equating the Perth Pirates with the Somali ones ,is Olympic Class twaddle.
