Western Reds record holder Matt Fuller has given the National Rugby League a huge serve for ignoring WA for the past 25 years.
“It’s beyond a joke,” the foundation Reds player said.
“There are a lot of smart people running the game but not to include a team from the West is a dumb idea.
“There is a burning desire to get rugby league back here. Can’t they see that.”
The former hooker made 59 appearances for the Reds in three seasons before it was axed in the Super League war.
“Twenty five years is punishment enough,” he said at yesterday’s NRL Nines competition.
“As an inaugural player I never for one minute thought my Western Reds playing record would still be standing.
“It’s something I would gladly lose to see a Perth team back in the NRL.”
The campaign to bring a team back to Perth in an expanded NRL competition under a new 2023 broadcast was fired up by new ARLC chairman Peter V’landys who dismissed Perth as home for a new club.
He said the NRL should not waste money investing in rusted-on AFL States and claimed there were concerns about player welfare because of extra travel.
He said a second Brisbane side was in his blueprint for expansion.
V’landys has refused several requests from The West Australian for an interview.
“I’m really proud of what an impact the Reds had in its short three years. It’s sorely missed,” Fuller said.
“If you ask anyone in the Eastern States, especially the players that come across, they are dumfounded that the NRL have not made it a truly national competition.
“The public interest is growing. It’s turned from disbelief into anger that we haven’t get a team.
“We are being used to promote rugby league but only for the Eastern States.
“It’s alright for them to bring teams over here to fill their pockets because they can’t get the same crowds in Sydney. They don’t have a problem with that.”
