In good news for our jnr development programmes our Reds SG Ball side beat Melbourne Storm in Melbourne at the weekend in the teams first trial game. What is most exciting is that this years team is 90% WA born and bred players and is indicative of the hard work put in over the last 5 years to create stronger Jnr RL programmes in the State. Good luck to the boys for next weeks season opener against North Sydney Bears at nib stadium.

Cowboys GM backs WA for NRL expansion

Peter Parr experienced more than most the highs and lows of professional rugby league in Perth during the three tumultuous years of the Western Reds.
The coaching and development manager was the only person employed from day one who was still there when the doors closed in 1997 as the club became a victim of the Super League war.
But he believes rugby league in Perth is now in better shape than it was in the 1990s and is ready for a side if the National Rugby League goes ahead with expansion plans.

Patterson could be tempted to Return Home
CORY Paterson has refused to rule out a return to the west if Perth's bid for an NRL team is successful.
Perth-born Paterson will fulfil one of his childhood dreams when he takes to the field for North Queensland in Saturday's NRL trial match against St George-Illawarra Dragons at nib Stadium, where several family and friends will be watching.
The 24-year-old back-rower expects to be targeted by a Perth team should one join the league in the coming years, but the former Newcastle Knights player insists he is loving life in Townsville and is yet to seriously consider a permanent move back home.
"I'd be silly not to consider any offer, but I've got a young family now and I need to do what's best for them," he said.

Paterson, a former South Perth junior, said it would be a "truly national competition" when a Perth side enters the league, most likely in 2015.
"Every other major sport has a team in WA and they all seem to work pretty well, so I can't see why rugby league couldn't fit in," he said. "Perth's a growing city and there are plenty of people who love their sport, plus there are some good juniors coming through, but they just need a pathway to the top."

Just heard that the nib redevelopment commences July and is due for completion in March. During this period capacity will be down to 10k.

Great effort against a side that would have no players if it wasnt a de-facto Queensland junior reps side.

This is our squad for this year and the clubs they are from. We only have 3 from interstate and may bring over a big forward we are looking at in Sydney but great to see so many WA lads getting a chance. In other Jnr news our Under 16 elite academt has just completed a very succesful tour of the East coast which will have taught them a lot. They got big raps from the clubs over there they spent time with.

West is Best
PROUD Perth product Cory Paterson says forget Brisbane and Sydney ... the NRL must go west when expansion happens.
The Cowboys back-rower was yesterday champing at the bit to get back to where it all began for him when North Queensland flew to Perth for their second trial game against the St George Illawarra Dragons on Saturday.
Born in the west, Paterson started his path to the NRL when spotted by Newcastle while playing for WA as a 15-year-old.
Now a first-grade regular and with the code flourishing, he believes the time is right for Perth to return to the NRL.

And another one, everyone seems to be lining up in our corner!

Neil Henry:
Henry has fond memories of WA and believes Perth is ideally placed for a club in an expanded NRL.
"It makes sense that if you are going to have a national competition you need a WA team," he said.
"It's a good fit for a national competition. There is a good rugby league community, the facilities are good and there is corporate support. There are a lot of positives."
Henry, who has been in charge at the Townsville-based club since 2009, was a teacher in Canberra when he was invited to take over the young Reds team.

WARL Push for Clear Vision
WA Rugby League wants early directives from the game's independent commission on the future of a bigger national competition.
The code's long-awaited governing body will assume control tomorrow, the eve of the WARL staging an NRL pre-season trial between the St George Illawarra Dragons and the North Queensland Cowboys at nib Stadium.
NRL boss David Gallop said he did not expect any changes before 2015, but the three-year wait sits nicely with local league officials.
Hopes were high two years ago that a new WA Reds side could enter the competition by 2013, but realistically nothing was going to happen until the commission took over.

NRL giants plan WA showdown
WA Rugby League chief executive John Sackson said bringing the game to Perth was a Manly initiative.
"They are inspired by the success of the Rabbitohs and they have been in discussions for several months with the NRL," Sackson said. "It will all come down to whether financially the numbers stack up to make it viable."
It is understood the game would have to be played at Patersons because of a contract clause South Sydney have with nib Stadium.
The WARL is pushing for a Perth NRL side in an expanded competition in three years, and Sackson said the success of Saturday's NRL trial at nib Stadium between St George Illawarra Dragons and North Queensland Cowboys, with a crowd of more than 8500, showed Perth was ready for a side.
"I was very, very pleased. To get that crowd on a weekend when there was a fair bit of sport in Perth was very pleasing," he said.
"Also, given that in a few weeks we have the Rabbitohs here, there was pressure on the discretionary dollar.
"I was delighted. There was plenty of atmosphere, people were passionate, the game was a pretty good spectacle and it was another step in the right direction."

Interesting comment about South's having exclusive rights to nib stadium! Not very good fo rRL here unless Sth's are willing to bring more than one game West a year.

He should have done!

Not surprised the WARL are spewing. 5 years of hard work engaging the community, WA Govt and corporates, setting up jnr development programmes and working their balls off hosting NRL games to show public support and Sage thinks he can waltz in at the 11th hour, appoint a CEO and coach and just get a team?

Reality is he would probably be worth less than 1million a year in terms of investment, having a strong grass roots and jnr development linked directly to the NRL team is worth far more imo.

I see zero advantage to a Sage led team and lots of potential bad things. His reign in charge of Glory has been a disaster, fans have deserted them, corporates have deserted them and on the field they are a joke.

Dimitri have you got a link for that story?

WA Rugby League open to joint bid with Tony Sage for Perth NRL team

by: Michael Washbourne
From: PerthNow
February 14, 2012 4:03PM

THE WA Rugby League has not ruled out joining forces with mining magnate Tony Sage in a united bid for a Perth NRL team.

As revealed first by News Ltd, Sage has expressed interest in co-owning an NRL side with former Balmain hooker Ben Elias and met with league boss David Gallop today to discuss the newly formed commission’s expansion plans for 2015.

Perth is strongly tipped to receive one of two rumoured new franchise licenses from the league when expansion is given the green light, most likely before the end of the year.

Sage’s business model is believed to be similar to the one developed by close friend and fellow millionaire Nathan Tinkler in Newcastle. Tinkler owns both the Knights (NRL) and the Jets (A-League).

The Perth Glory owner’s interest in bringing a rugby league side to Perth caught the WARL by surprise, but chief executive John Sackson is open to the idea of teaming with Sage to establish the code in the west.

“If any other entity would like to sit down and discuss the situation with the WARL and perhaps get on board for one unified approach for getting an NRL franchise back here then we would welcome that opportunity,” Sackson said today at the launch of the South Sydney-Brisbane Broncos match to be played in Perth on March 23.

“We would invite interested parties to sit down and have a chat to us with the ultimate goal of getting a franchise back here. That's what we want and that's what the sports fans of WA want.

“The public in WA want their rugby league, they want their NRL, and we've gone a long way to conveying that message to the powers that be in Sydney.”

The WARL’s bid has centred around developing the code in WA, with junior development a strong focal point.

That has been reflected in the strong attendances for NRL matches held at Perth’s nib Stadium in recent years, including last Saturday’s trial between St George-Illawarra and North Queensland that attracted a crowd of almost 9000 people.

Sackson denied Sage’s plan, which appears not to have a grassroots component, had jeopardised the state’s position with NRL heavyweights.

“Everyone knows the work we've been doing to earn more respect for the game and put ourselves into a position where we are strongly considered as a likely expansion destination,” Sackson said.

“The challenge for us … is to build a bid that's sustainable for the long term and, hopefully, irresistible to the commission when it comes time to selecting expansion franchises.

“It's a competitive world. The fact that other people have emerged with a franchise here is a reflection on the fact that we are considered a favourite to get a franchise, so it's not surprising that other parties have come out and want to get on board.

“But it’s much more than a case of picking up a team and plonking it here with no real connection or concern or care for the grassroots of the game.”

Sackson was confident the WARL could match Sage’s proposed $20 million proposal for the Perth team as well as attracting a host of wealthy sponsors.

But Sackson, who added that he has been constant contact with Gallop for the past two and a half years, said it was too premature to discuss potential coaches.

“The commission has not come out and confirmed expansion has happened,” he said.

“Do we believe it will? Yes. Do we believe it will be 2015? Absolutely. But to be dropping names of coaches now for a team that would be entering the competition three years down the track we think is a little premature.

“We think that if we are successful in earning the right to have a franchise, we'll be very careful in targeting the sort of coaching staff that we believe would be needed to form a very successful franchise on the field and off the field.”

Sackson said he intended to speak with Gallop about today’s meeting with Sage.

WA Rugby League chief executive John Sackson responds to a rival bid for a Perth NRL team from mining magnate Tony Sage.
Q. What's your position on Sage's quest to get the license?
A. It's fair to say that the WARL have worked very hard for two and a half years now and perhaps a little longer than that to earn more respect for the game of rugby league in Western Australia and to strengthen the foundations of the game in WA and to put us in a position where it's fair to say we are considered a favourite, if not the red hot favourite, to get an NRL franchise back in Perth when the commission addresses the issue of expansion. We've worked very hard and very closely with the South Sydney Rabbitohs over the past three years and this will be the fourth year that the Rabbitohs have made the investment to bring one of their home games to nib Stadium. They've played a big role in the development and growth of the code here. The public in WA want their rugby league, they want their NRL and we've gone a long way to conveying that message to the powers that be in Sydney.
