Changes Building the Future at WA Rugby LeagueThe Western Australian Rugby League has made changes at Board level as part of the process to build strength into the local game and get ready for the future. With an expected decision on expansion for the National Rugby League in the near future, the WA Rugby League has announced it will be ready both at local level and national level to grow the game for the fans and participants in the West.Richard Campbell who has been on the board for six years has taken on the role as Chairman to guide the League through the structural changes needed as changes unfold. David Hobbs who has chaired the organisation for the past 18 months will take the role of Bid Director.“Achieving an NRL franchise for WA is important to the game and for the pathways and aspirations of a strong and vibrant local competition. It is also important to the many fans we have in the west that Perth is seen as a player in a truly national game. Rugby League as a football code is very strong here and we want to make sure it endures at all levels”, stated the new Chairman.“After the Reds folded in the nineties because of the Rugby League problems at a national level, the local competition suffered. We have worked hard to get it back to a strong position and currently enjoy the status as the most successful state outside of the heartlands of New South Wales and Queensland. As far as we are concerned that will never change!”“In the coming weeks we will unveil our 2020 Strategy for the game in Western Australia and also announce our bid to be considered in the expansion of the NRL. We will not do that at the expense of our local game”.“Our CEO John Sackson has built a positive culture for growth and will work to build the management of the game over the coming years to ensure success.”In announcing the changes, WA Rugby League has restructured the Board team that will move the game forward in Western Australia.Chairman: Richard CampbellNRL / Bid Director: David HobbsMarketing Director: Terry CreaseyFinance Director: Sean SomervilleFootball Director: Brad HopesDevelopment Director: Paul BransbyCorporate Director: Bruce HavilahCommunity Director: Lynette McGivern

Looks like Sage wants origin in Perth. I've advocated Origin in Perth in other threads, especially if/when we expand there.

I think its a good move - Origin is the games trump card, and one game of each series should be moved around between Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Auckland. Milk state governments/stadium promoters/local governments for millions for the rights to that game.

But should definately NOT be locked into Melbourne every year. The stadium is an issue in Perth though.

Asside, I'd like to see the WA "bid" involve Sage or someone similar partly involved - I have reservations about the state body 100% owning the only club in the state - what is in the Perth Reds interests may not always align with whats in the WARL's. The Storm and Warriors are examples of how it should work - private ownership of the club working with the local governing body for the sport, but not owned by it.

Since the NRL will look at location first, then work with potential partners, I think a 60/40 WARL/Sage ownership structure would be in the games best interests.

THE consortium behind Western Australia's NRL bid is making a shock play for a State of Origin game in Perth next year.

The Sun-Herald can reveal former NSW captain Ben Elias and multimillionaire mining magnate Tony Sage are set to take a detailed proposal to the West Australian government that urges it to lure an Origin game to the state. The plan would result in the ARL Commission pocketing $5 million from the move - double the amount offered by the Victorian government.

The commission is yet to decide whether to take an Origin game from the heartland states next year, with Melbourne attempting to snare a match for the next five years. However, the late and lucrative Perth bid will be hard to ignore, particularly with the players agitating for a $50,000 payment for each appearance.

''Origin is the jewel in the crown for rugby league and the ideal way to promote the game,'' Sage said. ''We believe our proposal to play a game in Perth next year will be well received.''

Sage, the owner of the Perth Glory A-League franchise, and Elias are the brains behind a bid to restore a rugby league franchise in Western Australia. The state has not had a team since the Perth Reds were axed in 1997.

''You talk about promoting the game and expanding it - the obvious choice is Perth,'' Elias said. ''I've always believed that State of Origin should stay in NSW and Queensland. However, if the game is serious about expansion and making it national, we need to share our showpiece. I'm tired of NSW always giving up their home-ground advantage for the benefit of the game. It's about time Queensland gave one up.''

An Origin game in Perth would have several benefits. The game could be played during the day, allowing the code's best players to showcase their skills on a fast, dry track, and be shown in the eastern states in prime time.

''It would be huge,'' Elias said. ''It would be the most sought-after ticket in Australian sport. There is so much excitement and so much money over there. It would be sold out in no time. This will show that there is a really solid commitment there for the game of rugby league.''

The commission is still determining the locations for next year's interstate series.
''We're continuing to have discussions with a number of interested states but nothing has been determined at this stage,'' ARLC chief executive David Gallop said.

The development will fuel the debate over Origin's value, and how much the players deserve. It's been speculated the series is worth $35 million, although Gallop said a figure was difficult to determine.

''Outside of television, [Origin] generates somewhere between $15 million and $20 million,'' Gallop explained. ''There's no separate allocation of television money for Origin, so it's purely speculative what number is attributed to it. It's reasonable to put a value on Origin TV but difficult the way the current deal is structured.''

NSW and Queensland players earn $20,000 per appearance. Gallop said this would rise again under the new broadcast deal, adding that the money generated needed to be shared across the game.

''We've increased Origin payments significantly over recent years but we're always conscious that things like the minimum wage for non-representative players needs to be increased as well.''

Gallop added the Rugby League Players' Association had yet to discuss with the commission the prospect of scrapping Origin loyalty payments. ''It's a matter for the players to raise with the player's association,'' he said. ''It does provide a big lump sum in a tax-effective way and it's unashamedly designed to promote the interests of players who stay loyal to the game.''

Ahh... everybody's trying to ride the Origin coat tails.

Good luck to them too, if it boosts interest in the game in WA then I'm all for it. Maybe not next year though - 2014 would be better. I'm also guessing it would have to be a Sunday night - 6:10pm kick off local, 8:10pm in Eastern states.

Typical Eastern states ignorance. I don't want Sage anywhere near a WA NRL team. He has no interest in RL or supporting RL in WA. He has no interest in investing money in a NRL team, he has no interest in anything other than cutting his running costs and subsidsing his soccer team. Frick of Elias and stick to what you know, you have no clue about the game in Perth. What the frick makes him think the WA govt is going to shell out $5mill to host a game?

Now I have that off my chest! Perth should not get a SOO game until the WA Reds are back in the comp and the new stadium is built. Pattersons is not good enough to host SOO imo.

ps Storm is exactly the model we don't want in WA. despite over a decade of the Storm being in Melbourne the VRL is no stronger now that it was before the Storm and Victoria still can't beat WA in the affiliated states comp.

Wat? I said I have legit reservations about the Perth NRL club being 100% owned by the WARL governing body.

There is highly likely to be a conflict of interest there - maybe part membership owned, part private?

The WARL wholely owning the Reds is a bad idea. That isn't "ignorance". Its just standard business practice to avoid conflict of interest.

You don't let a state body own a club. Or else you end up with the Waratards or Port Adelaide.

I like how Benny himself seems to have come up with the $5 Million figure that the WA government will pay for the game...

Wonder how he has worked that out?

Seriously dumb idea..

Sorry Goddo the ignorance rant wasn't at you but at the Sydney Media who have shown no interest in the WA reds bid or Perth until mouth Elias got involved.

I agree a three way split between a rich backer with RL interests at heart and the WARL and fan membership would be the ideal. Problem is Sage does not have RL at heart and in fact has no interest in RL beyond what it can do for his soccer team. He has gone on record saying as much. And as for Elias being the clubs first CEO, I'd be surprised if he knows the difference between Canning and Claremont!

One of the good things about our bid that few ever mention is the actual WA Reds bid management team is not the WARL, it is made up of a number of succesful millionaire businessmen from Perth, the WARL have a representive on this bid team and obviously a very close relationship. Cash Convertors have pumped in serious money to the bid so far and are very keen to be the clubs main sponsor again.

Yeh I'll dig it out. The chairman of the bid team is a rich guy who owns a number of McDonald's in WA.

Still of the opinion that while it's better than nothing it's still shit compared to what it should be. Three national teams will be playing out of it year-round...

You'd think the artisits would be able to get it at least looking something like! That East stand isn;t showing any corprorate boxes (of which there will be over 50) or the corprorate BBQ terrace in the stand for 200 people or the bars/suites. It is also way to elevated. seriously if you are going to pay an artist you think they would make it look something like!

I can't believe for $90mill they couldn't afford a roof on the Sth stand as well. At least they are constructing it for a future roof but one now would have been nice!

Why do you think the stand is too elevated in the artists impression Red?Also says in the article 'open corprate boxes'!A half arsed attempt at corporate boxes if you ask me.

It just looks very steep. Would be a bugger to climb!
My understanding of the corporate boxes is they will be open but with bars/inside rooms directly behind the open box bit.

News article on the 2020 plan

The WA Rugby League has taken a huge step in its campaign for a team in an expanded National Rugby League with the release of its plan to take the game into the next decade.
The 2020 vision and strategic plan sets the league up for a national franchise in Perth for the first time since the demise of the Western Reds in 1997 during the Super League war.
The WARL plan has been more than two years in the making and incorporates a future NRL side and the local competition running hand in hand.
WARL chairman Richard Campbell is confident they are ready to win a new franchise, that they can guarantee the game's future and not leave the "vacuous hole" that was a legacy of the Reds.
"WA Rugby league has been planning for a long time and we are on track to deliver our bid when the Australian Rugby League Commission make any announcement," he said.
"The model we propose stacks up extremely well and looks after the code the way stakeholders want it. We must guarantee the future for all and not just the elite."
