Maybe, maybe not but what it has meant is that we will miss out on two years at least of that money. AFL had the teams in place so got the full 5 years of the deal value, we will get 3 at best. If they had more faith in the game and announced expansion in 2011 and were ready for the two new clubs to go from next season that is upwards of $60million more they could be getting in that we will miss out on. At most it is going to cost around $30 mill for that two years of costs for the expansion teams so that is effectively around $30mill of income the ARLC will miss out on.

& if they don't get the neccesary money?

The AFL were able to expand on the basis that they had a tremendous deal in comparison to us last time around, had they not got close to the bill, they could have funded the teams on a lesser scale than now, but still could have been done.

Unfortunately, we don't have that luxury, we do need the gaurentee of the funds coming in first, though one would be silly to think the expansion to Perth/Extra timezone + hopefully BNE2 isn't a part of the discussions with the networks. Whether they announce it publicly or not.

You can't compare the two sports on this, thanks to the ridiculous deal we allowed the Packers and Murdoch's to negotiate with themselves.

For the time being, we have to do things ona timescale that sits behind them. That will change once the game gets the payday that's coming.

As I said, if they had faith in the product. Same as Gallop's decision not to side with Racing and take a small betting offer instead, poor decision making is nothing new for the game.

PERTH'S NRL bid yesterday received a major boost after Manly agreed to shift July's grand final replay against the New Zealand Warriors across the Nullarbor.

The round 21 fixture will be the first rugby league match played at 40,000-seat Paterson's Stadium in Subiaco, which is home to AFL heavyweights West Coast Eagles and Fremantle.

Manly had originally been negotiating with the Western Australia Rugby League (WARL) to move next month's grudge match against Melbourne to Perth.

But after listening to members who wanted to give the Storm a hostile reception after last year's infamous Battle of Brookvale, Sea Eagles boss David Perry chose a different match to move west.

But a strong opponent was needed to satisfy the WARL's handsome financial incentive.

"The Warriors have a huge support base over there and both teams have never played in Perth before," Perry said last night. "And although we played in round one, it's still a grand final replay from the previous year."

Perry had also considered moving their round 18 clash against Parramatta to Gosford, which already hosted Wests Tigers in March.

But the potential for corporate sales in Western Australia - and particularly Subiaco - proved appealing.

Since the demise of the Western Reds in 1997, NRL games have been predominantly played at 18,000-seat NIB Stadium.

"We wanted to look at a bigger venue because we're hopeful of a crowd of around 25,000," Perry said.

I'm not surprised that Manly with their craptacular stadium is the club looking to sell the most games to other venues. With the State gov saying they won't fund suburban upgrades they will take more and more games to Gosford, New Zealand, Brisbane, Perth.... when the NRL expands it will limit their options.

Long term, there is no future for Manly on the Northern Beaches. Gosford, Sunshine Coast or somewhere else becons.

Great news, can't wait!

This isn't me trolling - I fully support the Perth bid. I'd suggest to you though that WARL needs to work with Manly & the Warriors to ensure that a big crowd rolls up for this potential blockbuster.

Anything less than 30,000 would be disappointing. Hope you guys really get out there and promote it (and sign up members at the game). Best of luck!

I'm sure they will be doing. WARL will be hamstrung by lack of $'s to spend on marketing but hopefully Manly will push the boat out and if Govt funding is involved EventsWA may help with marketing costs. I would be over the moon with 30k, probably 20-25k is more realistic and would be a great result. The crowd will be 80% Kiwis! Manly won't be the drawcard for this one. Around 100-150k Kiwis in perth so we need to get them behind the Warriors and that's how I would be marketing it. The 15k or so non Kiwi diehard RL fans will turn up anyway (minus the mAnly haters maybe) as it is a chance to see NRL. Of course dpends on day and KO time. As long as its not a 6pm Friday KO again!

The trouble is, is that Subiaco is a horrible ground for any sport and a horrible horrible horrible horrible ground for rectangular sports. Everyone in Perth knows that and this will keep the crowd down. A sunny sunday afternoon is the only chance of a decent crowd of about 20k.

Plus its Manly. I'm a rusted on league follower but I'm not 100% sure I'll go.

Well I'd just suggest that if Perth were to ever make a case for itself and say "hey remember when 30,000 came to this game" now's the chance.

Draw 30,000 to this game and you may as well stamp the NRL contract after the match...

Well, not literally, but you know what I mean.

I totally agree with you and its why I'll probably end up going.
But in my opinion, they already have two abstacles. A side that isnt well liked or are even that interesting to watch and the worst posible venue. If you then add an unfriendy time your gonna struggle for a 30k crowd in any city.

I might even fly over to Perth just to watch Manly get smashed.

In more positive news for the game here the Pilbara competition had just got its first major title sponsor.Sedgman are a major international mining industry company and great to see them getting behind RL. Also WARL organising some development work and fundraising for the game up there with support from NRL. Good to see some focus on the game in the far north.

RLW Steve Mascord:"Perth is definately in the interests of the game and seems a natural evolutionary step."

Joh Cartwright: "With the need for two additional teams to enter the NRL Cartwright said a Perth team could be beneficial for the game.
"It makes a lot of sense for the spread of the game and pay TV," he said.
"We want the game to spread and prosper and for people in Western Australia to appreciate the game like we do."

Good to see Perth continuing to get support from all quarters

WARL welcomes partnership with Sedgman Ltd

The Western Australian Rugby League is delighted to announce a partnership with mining solutions company Sedgman Limited. The partnership between Sedgman and the WARL highlights the growing interest in Rugby League throughout Western Australia.
The partnership kicked off this month with Sedgman the major sponsor of the inaugural Pilbara NRL Roadshow, which featured Rugby League’s One Community Ambassadors and league legends Trent Barrett, Mario Fenech, Adam MacDougall and David Peachey as well as WARL Development staff.
Sedgman’s sponsorship also includes naming rights to the 2012 Pilbara Rugby League competition, the Sedgman Premiership, which is contested by five Clubs.
WARL CEO John Sackson said he is thrilled to welcome Sedgman Limited to the WARL’s expanding sponsorship family.
“Sedgman Limited is a growing international player in the mining services world and also has a proud history of supporting junior sports in Queensland.
“We are pleased to not only provide Sedgman with an effective means to help grow their corporate profile in WA, but also importantly to be able to assist them to enrich the Pilbara community by way of supporting Rugby League in the North West.
“Off the back of a strong ex-pat population in Karratha, Wickham, Port Hedland and Newman, the code already has strong foundations in the area and Sedgman’s enthusiasm and valuable investment will help accelerate awareness, interest and participation in the great game of Rugby League in this state.”
General Manager Western Australia for Sedgman Sten Soderstrom, said Sedgman had a culture of being actively involved in local communities.
“Our commitment to Rugby League in WA provides an important link to the Pilbara community and goes hand in hand with our expanding business investment in metals and iron ore in the region.
“We’re excited about our partnership with WARL and being part of the growth and development of Rugby League in the North West.”
Sedgman, Australian Exporter of the Year in 2011, is a leading provider of mineral processing and associated infrastructure solutions to the global resources industry and is recognised internationally for its mineral processing and materials handling technologies. Sedgman has projects worldwide, including North and South America, China, Europe, South Asia and Africa.

Just a reminder for those concerned about our potential viability (Florimo!)

Western Australia's bid team claim they'd be among the highest sponsorship-earning NRL clubs within two years if admitted to the competition.
WARL chief executive John Sackson said about $4 million worth of company sponsorship commitments were already on the table and one of them was prepared to commit $1.5 million to be the team's major sponsor.
Following the lead of Star City casino's recent major sponsorship of South Sydney and the partnership between Crown Casino and the Melbourne Storm, Perth's Burswood Casino was among those eager to be involved with a WA team.
Despite having only been able to sell "hopes and dreams" at this stage, McManis said the interest shown by the business community made them believe the club would be very profitable.
"We've had a bit of a roadshow around some of the corporates of Perth, particularly the top end of town," he said.
"If we're awarded a licence, we anticipate we could go close to being the highest sponsor-earning NRL club in our first two years."
McManis put this down to the WA business community largely consisting of mining and resource companies who are reaping the profits of a mining boom and have gone untapped by eastern NRL clubs.
