What about Grothe at Centre?

he's a winger and always will be

most players swap positions now days and he stands at centre for most of our scrums

he also hits the ball up the middle of the ruck regularly, but that doesn't make him a prop

My lineup would be:

1. Wade
2. Williams/Burt GK
3. Grothe
4. Benny
5. Hayne

COMMENTS??

My only problem with that is who would defend in the centres? If Eric has a weakness (apart from offloading when getting driven back), its creeping in and not reading the play in defence.

Delaney is our best kicker??????? WTF!

Burt has it all over him. I'd prefer riddell at the top level as well. Delaney might be good technically but he's not up to the top job mentally. He buckles when it's on the line.

I'd even prefer Marsh in A Grade kicking. Prems is a different story. Delaney kicks the sh*t out of them at that level but he's no A Grade kicker. Like I said, he does not have the mental capacity for it!

Grothe is not a centre. He is a specialist winger. Full stop. We must be in trouble if we are thinking about how Grothe will go at centre.

How is JW in defence? It could be crap having Grothe and Burt defending on the same side. I think we will see O'Dwyer retain the centre spot and Pig will kick, backed up by Morris.

I feel more that way about Matt Cooper that I do jr. Grothe, imo is the best winger in the comp.... no world, by a long way. He also has a lot of the qualities that our games very good centres have. Depending on the other wing/centre options at your disposal I'd put him in the mix.

Preference is for him as a winger but if that had him outside a centre like Cooper I'd say no. He needs the ball in hand as much as possible if playing him in one than so be it. I have no doubt he'd handle it & set up a few for his own winger!

Cooper is a great centre. Similar to Ben Smith in defence, but better in attack.

The point of my thread was Should we Consider Grothe in the centres because

a) We are down on centres due to injury
b) We do not have a decent GK when Riddell is off and we could lose tight matches maybe due to GK.

My main concern is b) actually as O'Dwyer is playing very well there but our alternate GK are wingers in Burt and Williams.

I think Brian Carney is slightly better. Not for power but overall he is something special.

I disagree but you are entitled. He is very good but I think Grothe shades him now. I wouldn't have said that a few years ago but at the moment I have him miles in front.

Cooper is a freakish talent but imo he is a selfish centre. He is very similar to Ben Smith in defence that's right, but selfish in attack. with all the on field attention he recieves from the opposition defence I give him credit for still being able to do what he does. Which is run around them.

But he plays for himself often opting away from the better play which is very often an unmarked winger outside him. He makes line changes that runs into teamates territory & runs them out of their options.

Good centres can run around the opposition, but they can also open a hole for someone else in a better position. He milks it & runs his team out of options always wanting to break the line, then look for his supports.

Good centres don't need to work that hard for the line break. They play the numbers & let the ball take the ground off the defence with select passing.

Good player, Great talent, Selfish. We used to call them ball hogs back in the day! They always make the rep sides because no one else sees the ball to get a look in!

O'Dwyer should stay there. His play warrants selection. Marsh was a very good kicker in his early days. Morris should be allowed nowhere near the ball at that point & Delaney, for as good as he's supposed to be as a Kicker has kicked for sh*t in A GRADE & with ample opportunity to show better results.

I'd go Riddell / Marsh even if Delaney was in the side. But given he's played for sh*t in A GRADE I doubt he'd be there if not for kicking! Those two will likely be interchanging each other so one will allways be there. I'd go with Williams if he plays A Grade though. He has stepped up to the plate in that regard.
