Issued at 10:45 pm on Friday 8 June 2007
Synoptic Situation: 9:00 pm EST Friday
A deep low east off Newcastle is moving slowly south-southeast, and is expected
to be off the Sydney coast on Saturday.
Winds are expected to average over 65 km/h with peak wind gusts to exceed 90
km/h in the Hunter, Metropolitan and Illawarra, particularly near the coast.
Heavy rain is expected to cause flash flooding in the Hunter, Metropolitan and
in the north and eastern parts of Central Tablelands tonight. Heavy rain should
ease in the Hunter district Saturday morning, while it continues on the Central
Tablelands and Metropolitan and extends into the Illawarra. Falls of over 150mm
have been reported today in the Hunter with widespread flash flooding.
Damaging surf conditions, with waves exceeding 5 metres in the surf zone, are
likely to produce significant beach erosion between Newcastle and Port Hacking,
extending south to the Illawarra and northern parts of the South Coast Saturday
morning. Water levels above the highest astronomical tide of the year are
possible.
