Correct. But given this is a new strain of flu, derived from animals, it has a higher risk of mutating into a superbug, which will have a much higher mortality rate than the common flu. The containment at the moment is not to prevent fatalities, but it's to contain any possibility of a new stronger flu mutating from it in humans, for which there may or may not be any medication to treat it.

The threat may seem minimal now, but it only takes someone with a poor immune system and some other factors for it to become a very serious threat. Thus the reason for worldwide alarm from the WHO. Your common flu, over years of exposure our bodies have developed anti-bodies, with any new virus they are non-existent, the risk of mutation is far greater.

This is not a new strain of flu, but a variation on the H1 strain that has been around since 1918. There is worldwide concern, but the Australian Government has over-reacted in its response. This started with deaths in Mexico, where nutrition, health standards and health facilities are nowhere near the quality we have here. A spokesperson for WHO actually stated on the ABC radio the other day that they were surprised by the quarantines etc they have seen here. Australia is the only country quarantining people suspected of having or having been incontact with those who have the flu and / or closing schools. Any flu can mutate and become a "superbug", but there are no calls for quarantines etc every winter when flu season starts.

Someone some where needs to get the message across that there is no need for the panic that is ensuing here.

Who'll refund flights & hotel costs to Bulldog supporters who are going up today/tomorrow? OR Better yet, who'll pay the extra days for those supporters? Oh that's right, f**k the Bulldog supporters, who cares aye.

Diddums, stay up for an extra day or two.

Exactly. At worse, just another -20 to the differential for the Roosters...

I agree there is no need to panic, and the government is seemingly reacting overboard in comparison to the rest of the world, however it is also interesting to note we have the highest infection rate per capita in the world at present. You're right any flu can mutate, but this type of flu is more succeptible to it than others.

To be honest, I don't see any of it as panic from the general population. Just the government being pro-active in trying to contain the outbreak, IMO we're already too far gone to prevent it, it's impossible to contain it now with so many people having it, even unknowingly, especially at this time of the year where many will write it off as the regular flu.

So Broncos essentially wanted the game delayed or postponed because they haven't been able to train for some of the week....

Boo freaking hoo

No genius. They essentially wanted the game delayed or postponed because there was a very distinct possibilty that they would not have been able to field a team.

Don't let the truth (or comprehension) get in the way of your self-righteousness.

FMD there are some idiots in this world.

risbane Bronsos winger Antonio Winterstein sent for swine flu test

June 11, 2009 Brisbane Broncos winger Antonio Winterstein has been told to go to hospital to be tested for swine flu less than an hour after NRL officials announced Friday night's NRL clash with the Bulldogs would proceed.
Brisbane fullback Karmichael Hunt became the second rugby league player to be confirmed as having swine flu on Friday.

Winterstein told Queensland Health officials monitoring the health of Brisbane players quarantined since Tuesday he was displaying symptoms of swine flu.

After Hunt tested positive, Winterstein was advised to go to Logan hospital to be tested.

Brisbane are furious the NRL has decided to go ahead with Friday night's game with their players unable to train since Monday.

If Winterstein tests positive it raises the question whether other players involved in Friday night's game may have swine flu.

If he is positive, it could be interesting to see what happens.

You gotta admit though, this flu must be very easy to catch. If akka can go into the sheds and 2 players come down sick, and then another Broncos player catches it from Hunt...

Good to hear it's going ahead. Something true the NRL said was that clubs suffer players with illness all the time, it's disrupted teams in the past. If teams can still be fielded then fine. It's not QLD health's problem anymore, just the Broncos whining about lack of training.

Right then on Fox Sports News, Broncos may refuse to play despite the NRL instructing the game to go ahead. I say if they don't play, give the Dogs the 2 points.

Foxsports News have just reported that the Broncos are not playing the Bulldogs.

They (Broncos) will not be showing up for the game.

They have sent emails apologizing to all their sponsors.

The Problem is that Lockyer, Wallace, Folau and Thaiday are now out of Isolation but the rest of the Broncos must remain in Isolation till 10:00pm tomorrow night.

if the Broncos don't show up IMO we should be awarded the 2 points and the Broncos should be severely punished. Take extra points off them if they think they own the game. There has been many instances in the past few years where a whole team has contracted a flu or illness mid week and its disrupted their preparation. If they don't show up i'd take extra points off them plus a huge fine.
