What if the NRL did an AFL on the NZRU?

This has been pointed out over and over and yet we keep hearing the same thing. I repeat THERE HAS BEEN NO SIGN OF ANYBODY OR ANYONE COMING FORWARD TO BID FOR A SECOND NEW ZEALAND TEAM. NIL. NOTHING.NOUGHT. (BTW that wasn`t yelling, just frustration).
The other thing is of course: act in haste, regret at leisure.
We`re in this for the long haul, do it once and do it right. That`s how a good business operates.

There weren’t many proactive AFL bids for GWS and GC either. But the AFL believe these clubs are future proofing their competition, so they did it themselves.

I expect an NRL team II in NZ will be a far quicker win than what GWS or the Suns will be.

If you build it, they will come.

Yeah, but Ideas Man, fumbleball has a flexible club distribution system and money to burn so propping up a couple of clubs for a decade or two (forever till it sends them broke will do me) doesn`t matter so much to them. We don`t have that sort of cash yet and even if we did I`m not 100% convinced it`s a good idea. Better to have the foundations laid with a solid business plan rather than relying on handouts.

Why not send Canterbury to Christchurch and be the Canterbury Bulldogs. The name represents the South Island of NZ & continue to have a link with Sydney fans.

Why can’t the NRL throw a team in the south of NZ and have them as the biggest pro sports club in the south, while the All Blacks remain the biggest team in the country?

I think the time is ripe. Sorry Perth, I would love to see you at the table, but there are bigger fish to fry right now.

There’s two problems with that- the Crusaders (presuming Christchurch is the target) or the Hurricanes (presuming Welllington).

it’s also doubtful that the Warriors are bigger than each of the 5 main Super Rugby clubs, certainly the Crusaders. We’re having a great year crowd wise so far, but that’s 4 games, let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

NZ as a whole is already pretty much in the situation you describe Sydney being in with a dominant code (union) and a minority code (League) that has carved out a solid niche for one club. A second club in Christchurch or Wellington would be more of a GWS or GCS than a Swans.

I might be reading this wrong but are you saying that the warriors are already the "second niche" club in Christchurch, and a dedicated Christchurch club would play second fiddle to the warriors? ala. Gws to the Swans?

I get the warriors have branded themselves "New Zealand" but in all but name they are an Auckland club, surely a club based purely out of Christchurch would Trump them? I was under the impression NZ had a strong "Auckland vs the rest" mentality in sports and rivalries

There's also a strong dislike of Christchurch too. The Warriors have been everyone's team for 20+ years. I'm not from Auckland but I'd rather poke my eye out than support a Christchurch team (which ironically would see my fit in perfectly down there).

Take out a few years of Covid, I think you will find that the Warriors are the most followed and have the largest financial turnover of all NZ sports clubs.

Having returned to NZ, they are just resuming their position.

Happy to be corrected.
