My unpopular opinion relating to this: both sports are brilliant. They are great in the way they are unique.

We should be proud of aussie rules as the country's original indigenous sport. And we should be proud of rugby league because we play it better than anyone else on the planet.

We don't need to compare them...except to say that they are both made to look electrifying in comparison to the snails pace lethargy of Union.

I love Union. But we (NZ) play it well

Didn’t we pinch it off the Irish and just tweaked it a bit?

Loving rugby league while despising Australian rules and vice versa is a strong indicator someone grew up in a more provincial (and frankly worse) Australia than the one we live in now. Easier to watch both than it's ever been.

My unpopular opinion is that the 2 referee system was better - there seemed to be (at least, to me) fewer transgressions in the ruck.

But most people don't agree.

Also, another unpopular opinion - Vlandys is a bum, and I don't trust him.

I agree with the first point (but would prefer them to manage separate parts of the game).

It seemed to me that by having two referees, a lot of players thought twice before giving away dumb penalties, because they were probably more likely to get caught.

Now that we've gone back to one referee, the officiating standards have reached an all-time low, imo.

Yep. I’m not an advocate for death by penalties, and like the 6 again rule, but the one ref is naturally gonna miss a lot.

Since one ref, the offside penalty is an endangered species while a glut of forward passes from dummy half are being missed. In both cases it affects the opposition - basically penalising them. One guy can’t cover everything. I’d have one ref on the ruck and general play, while the other on the 10m.

Both could rule on tries and decide between them any queries. Thus also removing the need for a bunker.

Isnt that why we have touch judges? Surely we could have one touchie watching for off side, one touchie watching the ruck with the ref mostly focused on the ruck seeing as he's closer. No one is better positioned to call offside than the touchies! One ref isnt the problem, the three refs not doing their jobs well is!

My unpopular pinon: the Kangaroos under perform on the international stage given the advantages they have over other countries.

Re Touchies, they can’t mark the 10m so shouldn’t enforce it. Players can’t look to the sidelines for the flag men, need someone marking in the middle.

re kangaroos, in recent years indeed I think we are getting scares from the opposition. I honestly think we aren’t nearly as good as we used to be.
