When he compared it to avatar, he meant in the sense that it's a pretty film to look at, but story is pretty meh

Exactly.

I've had a lot of people tell me to watch "Gravity", but only if it's in a 3D theatre. Seems to me it's a movie that's great to look at but that's where it ends - and that's a shame.

I knew that you meant, what I am saying is that just because a story is simple doesn't mean it is bad. Cast Away was a simple story, but good movie IMO. If they had dragged out Gravity for over 2 hours that would have made it bad, but the 90min run time makes it punchy.

Gravity is outstanding. The best use of modern technology in film for a long time. Cuaron's techniques are great and I really wish he would make more movies.

Avatar's story was shit and cliched. Gravity's story from my knowledge has never been done before and though it's not complex that doesn't make it bad. The effects aren't like atmosphere. The reason people say see it in 3D is because the 3D actually adds to the atmosphere and the feel of the film. The cinematography and the 3D of the long shots captures the feeling of the movie.

It's a great example of what can be done with effects nowadays. Much better than the loads of films with CGI explosions and monsters and armies.

9/10

The time of movies now shits me I understand some need to be long to fit the story but some seriously drag on and I do applaud gravity for just sticking to what it was meant to do and used its strengths as the main focus a grab for the audience.

Thought the effects were amazing but like I said the story was meh. The action sequences looked awesome but thought the talking parts were boring in comparison.

When she was in the space notation floating through the way the camera work was done actually made me feel claustrophobic a bit and some parts were point of view as well which was interesting

The movie wasn't really about the story, it was more about the themes of survival/isolation/psychological aspects of that situation. All the cinematography, dialogue and effects were to illustrate those themes. They drew inspiration from shipwreck survivors and the like.

Just watched pacific rim

Awful Aussie accents aside, I enjoyed it. Giant robots v giant aliens...who doesn't enjoy that! Good ol' fashioned popcorn flick.

I just couldn't feel sympathy or anything for Bullocks character.

Is that because we knew almost nothing about the characters, there was no time for characterisation thus it wasn't about them.

Well she tried to explain a small back ground but I just couldn't get into it

Saw Prisoners today

Very very good movie. Hugh Jackman was great as was Jake Gyllenhal

I was looking forward to watching this... but left in disappointment.

This movie starts off with a 5 (or so) minute real-life portrayal of how Hansel & Gretel will look. However in the scene where we meet the Witch in the ginger-bread house left me confused. I was expecting to see an old lady with wrinkly skin... whereas the Witch they showed looked like a demon summoned straight from the deepest fiery pits of hell!

After that, we then fast-forward to the future, where they are both grown up and are professional Witch Hunters.

To start off with, Hansel has to be at least 15 years older then his sister, and they're only meant to be a few years apart (given they were both young children when they were abandoned).

Secondly, H&G is a German story, yet Hansel speaks with a pure American accent. English actress Gemma Arterton played the role of Gretel, and the American accent she has can easily be picked up as fake, and in the scenes where she's screaming, you can hear the English accent come out.

I found a lot of the time, the movie was repeating itself;

  • They hunt witches
  • They engage in a fight
  • They get seperated
  • The evil witch escapes
Also, considering it's set in the 1800s, Hansel has what appears to be a futuristic shotgun, and Gretel has a crossbow that fires darts as fast as a machine gun fires bullets. Let's not forget that in more than one scene, we see what appears to be a hand-held taser... in the 1800s. And in one of the final scenes, we see the 'good witch' fire what appears to be a mounted heavy machine gun that was used in WW2.

Another scene shows a Witch locked up in a jail cell when another Witch comes to free her, and can set fire to the building she's captive in by a simple motion of her hand. I mean... why doesn't the Witch locked up just do something to bust herself out?

And these Witches don't need brooms, they can simply jump on old stick and ride away to safety.

And all along... a... well I don't know what the creature was, perhaps a cross between a troll and an ogre, who was on the Witches teams, turns out to be the biggest game changer of the movie by saving Gretel not once, but twice, from her demise... and let's not forget the virgin boy who tags along with them.

Entertaining at times but I can't recall seeing a movie with so many flaws.

5/10.

**broad spoilers for gravity below**

Saw gravity last night and while I agree most movies tend to drag on too much these days, I thought this was one movie that could have done with an extra 5-10 mins of exposition at the beginning.

Don't need to see her training or take off or any of that bullshit, but a quick 5 mins of them prepping for the spacewalk with a bit of background of who they all are would have helped. As it stood I found myself not caring if bullock or clooney survived, which pretty much takes all suspense off the table.

I also think 1-2 mins at the end might have been better. I understand that the movie was a rebirth theme and showing her taking a few steps at the end was artistic and all that, but seriously she landed somewhere in Asia, be nice to know if she is actually safe or not.

I saw The Frozen Ground recently. Well acted (Cage and Cusack are great, but it's stolen by that High School Musical girl), but a little unsatisfying. 5/10

Just watched Mortal Kombat (1995) for probably the 3rd time. A lot of cheesy lines, but I'm a massive MK fan so I still like it. I'd say none die hard fans wouldn't be huge fans though
