Grosse Pointe Blank 1997, starring John Cusack, Minnie Driver and Dan Akroyd.
Different take on the hitman theme. It's a lot of fun, Cusack and Driver are very likeable, delivering very well written and snappy dialogue. Great soundtrack, Pixies, The Clash, Dexy's Midnight Runners, Dylan, Echo and the Bunnymen and heaps more from the 80's.
At a guess, I'd say the director of Crazy, Stupid Love watched this and borrowed a few ideas.
7/10

Also rewatched Crazy Stupid Love 8/10 and The Nice Guys 8/10 recently, both excellent comedies and highly recommended.

Looks like July 2025 is going to have competing superhero movies.

2 weeks after Superman by James Gunn comes out, we'll get this -

Just rewatched Harry and Tonto. The Art Carney film from 1974 that I haven't watched in about 30 years. I had totally forgotten that Chief Dan George (from Outlaw Josey Wales) and Melanie Mayron (from Car Wash) were both in it. Very well written and acted, I'll be watching it again soon.

Red Rooms 8.5. French Canadian film on SBS. Won't be something for everyone as it is disturbing subject matter (a trial resulting from torture and snuff films on the dark web), but doesn't really show anything. Very interesting social commentary and well acted.

Art Carney won the Best Actor Oscar in a very strong field that year.

American Splendor 2003 starring Paul Giamatti as legendary Underground Comics artist Harvey Pekar.

Brilliant movie, Giamatti does an awesome job as Harvey but the real Harvey Pekar often breaks in interrupting the film from time to time. This works a treat. Hopefully watching this will inspire you to track down some American Splendor comics as they are truly worth the effort to find. The film also recreates some of Harveys many appearances on David Letterman which can be seen on Youtube. You can tell Letterman was a big fan of his. Highest recommendation, I've seen this many, many times.

Rebel Moon Parts 1 and 2 directors cut typical Snyder film full of slow motion killings, great sounding movie for those who have a dolby atmos sound bar or home theatre.

Me and my best friend (who's a longtime Horror Hound like me) went and saw Heart Eyes last night. Some good quality gore and interesting kills but it was abundantly clear they are trying to set up a new franchise. A killer with a recognisable mask slaying hapless teens. It's obvious they want to create the next Michael or Jason. We're going to see The Monkey tomorrow night so I'll give my report on that after I've seen it.

Target 1985. Gene Hackman, Matt Dillon
Thought I'd rewatch it in honour of Hackman's passing and he was excellent as usual even though the writing and directing were a bit ordinary. Basically a "Taken" type movie, wife gets kidnapped in Paris, Gene + Dillon (father & son) to the rescue. Keep an eye out for the scene with a sick old German spy on his sick bed giving Gene some info - he gives his performance everything he's got and his delivery is pure Get Smart quality. pretty funny, not meant to be but I couldn't help but remember Sigfried at his best. 7/10
I watched Enemy of the State again just recently but might give that another whirl as well, great movie and also The French Connection, one of my favourite movies. Great actor Gene, RIP.

Taken 3.
Not half as bad as I was expecting but ok. The daughter is still really off putting, such a bad actress but not as bad as in parts 1 and 2. 6.5/10

Dune pt 2. Bit of let down after the first installment, which I thought was excellent. 7/10

The Electric State (on Netflix)
News.com are calling the worst movie in living memeory - unlike them to exaggerate . In the same article they call Netflix "no good Netflix", can't help themselves.
The movie is obviously just a fun kids movie and robots are popular with kids at the moment. I enjoyed it, simple fare with two likeable leads and an ok story. 6/10

The Informer (on SBS on demand)
This was pretty good, a decent thriller starring Joel Kinnaman who was great in the original Altered Carbon and The Killing series. He's a really good actor but needs some more challenging roles. The end is a bit iffy but still a good watch. 6.5/10
