What Movies Have You Seen III

On the way home from work this afternoon I just had to drop into JB to see if they had Superman in 4K UHD - and they sure did.

Came home, and put it straight on - felt like I was 4 years old again seeing it for the first time. Effects are a little dated, as they should be for a 40-odd year old film, but I just got swept away in it, from go to whoa.

Being older and able to appreciate the things I never picked up on as a child, such as the casting. Christopher Reeve was simply born to be Clark Kent/Superman, I honestly applaud anyone who dared take on the role that he made his own, and the standard that everyone else would be held against. I thought Brandon Routh and Henry Cavill were excellent for their respective films, but neither of them even came anywhere close to Reeve.

Margot Kidder, probably my first ever on-screen crush next to Carrie Fisher, very beautiful without being unattainable. Cocky but kind, arrogance with innocence. When she interviewed Superman for the Daily Planet and he took her for a flight around the city, I legit teared up. But a lot of that would have been due to John Williams' score, especially Lois's theme. which played during this scene.

Gene Hackman, such a likeable asshole lol
Ned Beatty the perfect dopey sidekick
Valerie Perrine was a knockout - Miss Tessmacher!!!

A couple of famous faces such as John Ratzenberger (Cliff Claven from Cheers), and Larry Hagman giving Miss Tessmacher chest compressions and mouth to mouth lol

I never noticed before (obviously) but one of the detectives that follows Otis down into the underground train system is Capt. Murphy from the Lethal Weapon series, as soon as I heard him speak I knew it was him.

The only thing I wished for more of but only got a snippet was Terence Stamp as Zod, I did look for Superman II when I was there, but it was only on DVD, as soon as I see a 4K copy it's mine.

I always rated The Dark Knight as my fave comic book film - not anymore. This is timeless, and perfect.

Thank you Richard Donner.

10/10. Will watch again. And again.

The Superman cop / Lethal Weapon bloke is Donner’s cousin.

I ordered Superman the blu ray from uk this week but as I’m moving, unearthed my 2006 DVD box set. So that and the fact I got the MCU blu rays new for a tenner each…I’m set for some quality lock down.

Tell Me Who I Am. 8. People are f@#ked, interesting moral dilemma for the brother.

Hillbilly Elegy. Not great but not terrible. 7. Prob doesn't deserve the bad scores on rating sites but I think I heard it became politicised.

Interestingly, Margot Kidder was amongst over 100 actresses who was considered for the role of Lois Lane when they were casting the movie. She was screen tested along with Anne Archer, Susan Blakely, Lesley Ann Warren, Deborah Raffin and Stockard Channing. In the end it was between Channing and Kidder with Kidder being cast.

Jackie Cooper, who played Perry White, originally auditioned for the role of Otis. He only got the part of Perry White after Keenan Wynn, who was originally cast as White, dropped out just before shooting started due to heart disease.

Also it was interesting as to who was considered for the role of Superman before Reeve was cast. Robert Redford was offered a big pay day to take the role, but felt he was too famous. Burt Reynolds turned it down, Sly Stallone was interested but never approached. They offered Paul Newman his choice of Superman, Lex Luthor or Jor-El but he turned down all three roles. Bruce Jenner auditioned for the role. Patrick Wayne (John Wayne's son) was originally cast but dropped out when The Duke was diagnosed with cancer.

Neil Diamond and Arnie Schwarzenegger lobbied for the role but were turned down. Other actors who were approached for the role - James Caan, James Brolin, Lyle Waggoner, Christopher Walken, Nick Nolte, Jon Voight, Perry King, Warren Beatty. Even Kris Kristofferson and Charles Bronson were even considered.

Fact is Christopher Reeve in the end won the role after more than 200 actors auditioned for the role. He turned down wearing a muscle suit under the costume, but went on an exercise regimen under Dave Prowse to build up his physique for the role (as he was quite a skinny guy).

wow! Some fascinating choices there. Can you imagine Walken as Superman?

The Beast (Sometimes listed as The Beast of War) 7.5. Film about a Russian tank crew fighting a group of Muhajadin.

Riders of Justice 9.5 Danish film
What a great movie. Best things I have watched in ages.

Mads Mikkelson is good in every thing he does, but the 3 "geeks" are the highlight for me in this film.
Really hope they don't cock it up with an English language remake.

Going a bit retro lately..

Big Trouble in Little China - 8/10. One of the most hilarious genre-busters ever made. You have to go into this with an open mind: a bizzare mash of Chinatown kung-fu, Indiana-Jones-seque action/adventure, and 80's buddy-cop schlock rolled into one... all in a send-up of itself led by a hammed-up and blissfully unaware Kurt Russell. It is pure gold if you give in to it, watch out especially for the original Mortal Kombat inspirations.

Backdraft - 7/10. Essentially it's Top Gun for firemen. If you can get past the hokey backslapping and melodrama there's a half-decent character drama buried in there largely thanks to Kurt Russell and The-Other-Baldwin-Guy turning in credible performances. De Niro fans will be disappointed, he's sort of just 'there' and disappointingly barely interacts with Russell - you're half expecting a Travis Bickle to pop around but he's just coasting along unfortunately. A nice lazy movie.

Killing Them Softly - 7/10. Rough and raw hitman flick that drops all the gloss and slow burns it's way through a tale of a couple of idiots who get what's coming after ripping off the wrong guys. Don't go in expecting an action movie. Brad Pitt turns in a great weary 'seen-it-all-before' performance, but he's a part of a host of entertaining bit roles including odd cameos from Ray Liotta & James Gandolfini, and especially the chameleon Ben Mendelsohn in his raw aussie twang.

The Art of Self Defence - 6.5/10. A strange movie that doesn't know if it's an underdog Karate Kid story, a Charles Bronson flick, or a pitch black comedy. It's entertaining enough, but hard to invest in as your protagonist is all over the place (despite a well-cast Jesse Eisenberg). Good ol Pollux Troy turns up as the black belt master, managing to dance successfully between mysterious and hammed-up. Good if you're in the mood for off-beat.

Big trouble is an absolute gem. A movie that could so easily have ended up a complete mess under the wrong hands. John Carpenter was on a complete roll and Kurt Russell.,...just absolutely superb.
There was talk to remake it a while back.....I think this is just one of those movies that just can't be. The original had everything right and perfect.....a remake would be on a hiding to nothing.

Agree wholeheartedly. Carpenter does it right the first time. Remakes of any of his movies are going to suck. Just look at the Halloween remake as proof of this.

Venom was never as bad as people claimed it would be, and then as bad as a bunch of critics rated it. It was switch off your brain fun, and it depends on whether you have the capacity to do that whether you get enjoyment out of it I guess.

At the beginning (or end) of Venom they had clip from Spider-man: Into the Spiderverse. I thought well that looks crap, why are they making an animated Spider-man when there's real life movies all over the place. How wrong was I, that was one of my favourite movies of the year and is hands down the best Spider movie ever made IMHO.
I really enjoyed it. I did not understand the bad reviews that came with it.
