The Eels have been sh*t this year thanks to their appalling lack of direction and the two years where they have been consistent have choked in the past decade, so a 50 point thrashing by the warriors next round will be a fitting summation of Cayless's reign as captain and a fitting farewell. I hope the few thousand that do go enjoy this symbolism.
..... loyal to the bitter end to a club that has more coups than African countries combined in the 20th century.....
The guy helped lead his nation to a World Cup victory. The guy is a one club player. The guy has captained one team more than any other player.
Outstanding servant of the game, never involved in any off field rubbish, hardly ever if ever went to the judiciary, loyal to the bitter end to a club that has more coups than African countries combined in the 20th century. Nathan Cayless is a massive loss to rugby league. I think you will find Nathan has down an outstanding job of binding together a club that has so much in the way of politics that it shoots itself in the foot.
Bravo Nathan. Swift, you are the epitome of a deadset goose.
Yes he deserves it, no it won't happen.
tbh I've always thought Cayless is a pretty ho-hum player and I think it's a little incongruous that he'll retire with the records that he does under his belt.
Then you should change your signature.
If you want to take part in the joy of NZ's victory in '08 you should show more respect to the bloke that led you there.
That's a ridiculous comment.
I'm a Kiwi who has supported NZ League my entire life, that's why I am allowed to "take part" when we win the World Cup.
I'm not obliged to hold any opinion about any particular player.
No.
I'm confident that we still could have won the WC without Cayless's contributions as both prop and captain.
I've got nothing against the bloke, I'm psyched for him that he has achieved what he has. The initial poster is a troll fo sho, but there's a point lurking in there some where.....do you honestly think that Cayless was the great prop/great captain that his "most games/World Cup winner" status would suggest? I'm not sure. He got given the captaincy young and hung in there a long time and obviously got along well with coaches and selectors. What else?
To further on as I didn't see this post only your last...
Cayless was made captain for a reason. He's a great leader and inspiration to the younger Kiwis and his experience and level headedness would have lifted them. The same way he's captained Parramatta for 220 odd games is because players look up to him and he's a great influence on the younger guys and always takes them under their wing when they need it. He acts as a mentor to the younger players. Just listen to what Tim Mannah says about him and what an influence he's had on his career since day one. And he's the kind of player that other players lift for. I don't credit him with your world cup win, but he certainly played a part in it, a great captain always does.
Fair enough, I don't want to take anything away from Cayless as a level-headed bloke with a good attitude who was captaincy material from a young age.
I'm not showing any "lack of respect", I'm comparing one NRL prop to other NRL props (this is a thread about him after all) and saying I personally think he was an ok player but not outstanding.
No.

What a lot of rot. Cayless saved his best test performance for the World Cup final. He was rolling through the ruck through the entire time he was on with ease. It was an inspirational performance from him and I'm quite certain if you went and asked the other 16 men who took the field with him that night that they would be damn glad and grateful for his efforts in the middle third trenches to give the backs time and space to move.
