What the farewell of Nathan Cayless really means

Cayless was an alright player but a better leader. I thought his brother was much more talented purely as a player but Cayless has records to his name.

Wasn't the inspirational type of leader Ruben Wiki was nor had the raw ability but he is a clean and good ambassador for the Eels.

This I agree with

Eels fans should turn out in droves to farewell their captain and pay tribute to him. Win or lose, you guys should be there.

I agree.

At the end of the day he has led our club for so long, and he deserves to be sent off in style! I couldn't care less what our position on the table is, or whether were going to win/lose, i'm going to be at the game to salute the captain that has been a part of parra since i started following the footy. I hope everyone else comes too, i'd love to see a full house ( or close to it) for Cayless as he deserves nothing less.

The Eels have been sh*t this year thanks to their appalling lack of direction and the two years where they have been consistent have choked in the past decade, so a 50 point thrashing by the warriors next round will be a fitting summation of Cayless's reign as captain and a fitting farewell. I hope the few thousand that do go enjoy this symbolism.

amazing stuff.

think seriously about the position of captaincy.

despite the turnover of players (sh*tloads), coaches (3), the board & staff (sh*tloads), despite good seasons & sh*t seasons, this guy has remained as captain.

what does that tell you? could it be that despite all the dramas, everyone from good people to cretins attached to your club, all felt that he was a leader.

is there a greater indication of someone's leadership ability?

especially today where the axe is wielded pretty freely?

He will go down as our greatest captain ever. I wouldn't have it any other way.

Pfft. You have never heard of Ray Price, Steven Edge or Ray Higgs?

In a heartbeat, I'd have any one of that trio leading any of the GF packs that Cayless was in.

Ever. Meaning -in Parra's terms, since 1947.

Can't go making silly claims just because he's the personality of the month. He will be remembered as our longest serving skipper, our only home grown test captain, and our most capped test player. Not our best.

This talk is bit like when someone dies. People exaggerate how good they were. Sure Cayless is a good captain but greatest ever? surely not. Infact, I seem to remember some years when parra fans themselves called for the sacking of Cayless. There were a few years where he was a pillow and barely made 80 metres a game.

sure he's great but during his time at the eels I will say Hindmarsh had a much bigger influence on the team than Cayless.

^^ It's also funny that I was one of the few that said he should stay simply on loyalty and his dedication to the team alone and see out his contract, yet I'm being bagged for being a "Cayless Hater". I am disappointed with the team of the last decade not with Cayless, however, this also equates to a unsuccessful Eels reign for Cayless despite giving a tremendous amount for our club. I can't be one eyed on this issue. Yes he has been a great ambassador and tough player of our game for a consistent, long time... but the his blue and gold success is few and far between.

If you compare Hayne over two or three years and Cayless over the decade... I know who has left a more successful impression.

Cayless, Burt and Hindmarsh can thank their team for not caring when it matters.

As I said, Cayless was a great player in a team that couldn't give a f**k. If you thought they would turn up today against the Warriors for Cayless when they couldn't against the Rabbitohs for a finals spot in Cayless's last season you were kidding yourself.

The Eels need direction, end of story.

A miserable end for a miserable time at Parramatta for Cayless. If you want to feel sorry for him, feel sorry for the fact that he was a leader of such a sh*t team. One of my favorites of all time and will be missed, but the facts are there even for the most one eyed Eels fan...

I tell it like it is. The last two weeks are no different. Inconsistent dribble WAS the symbolic benchmark of Cayless's final match in a disappointing decade at the Eels.
