What's Sydney's biggest NRL club?

Souths are more popular, the Roosters are outdrawn by rival supporters most of the time at there home games, hence why there crowd averages are so good. Even in the trial match up here, it was a Roosters home game yet they were outnumbered 3 to 1 by Parra supporters.
Thats your opinion, being a STH for a long time up until 2003 when I moved up to QLD I can say that that is not the case.

Dragons probably have the biggest supporter base.

You know, I keep hearing that, but what's the go? They've got pretty ordinary crowd numbers, even for a Sydney outfit, and they don't draw more heavily than other teams, either.

Does the club count each pair of Dragons socks as two sales of merchandise, or what? What backs up this oft-typed remark? Is it just "accepted wisdom" despite the numbers?

To be clear, I'm not having a go at The Engineers Room, it's just that this "Dragons have the most supporters" thing baffles me.

Especially when people try to argue that the Dragons have more support than the Broncos :?

Dragons turn up in numbers on big game days.

Let me know when they crack the 50K attendance mark for a grudge match, then.

Maybe "most supported" might make more sense then.

I honestly think it's just a meme.

Seriously why do we put the Rabbits, if the question had been asked 2 years ago pre-Russell Crowe we would all be in fits of laughter. In the space of 2 years what have they done to be one of the big 4 in Sydney, besides a big hype-up within the media that they are that big, clearly an illusion.

The Dragons are a massive club, but they're Sydney supporter base is probably smaller than Manly's. Their real numbers lie in Country NSW and Queensland. I'd say they're the best supported Sydney Club, but one of the less supported clubs in Sydney.

Agreed.....IMO Saints Sydney crowds are ordinary.

But having lived in the country for five years I can tell you everyone is either Saints/Souths or Tigers.

easy 10,000 or so crowds with no success for decades.

with all their success the roosters have had their highest average was 18,000 with a years of semis and a GF.

souths nearly got to that after making the semis just once.

The answer to the question lies in the very nature of Sydney itself. Sydneysiders are transient, trend-conscious and fickle. We have many things to entertain us and expect to choose the best option each time.

Who is Sydney's biggest club? Most likely, whoever is winning when you ask the question.

Agree.

Can't say I have met many Dragons fans and those that I have met have all been much older than me, then again I don't live anywhere near Dragons territory.

I would say Dragons and Souths with the old timers and Parra and Tigers with the younger crowd. Bulldogs probably third in both groups, making them at or near the top overall.

I think it depends. Teams like Souths, Wests Tigers and Dragons have a lot of fans who live all over Sydney and all over the Country. Whereas Dogs, Roosters, Sharks, Eels, Manly and Panthers fans all mostly tend to live in their catchment areas. Ive lived in the St.George area and Sutherland Shire all my life. Never once met an Eels or Panthers fan, I’m not joking.

Same if you travel to the country. My Dad is from north west NSW and I still go there regularly. They all either support Newcastle or one of the traditional NSWRL clubs (i.e saints, rabbitohs, tigers)

Ahh, Souths are averaging over 25,000 this season

yes because they have been lucky enough to have the roosters and dogs as their home game, who both brought a lot of support with them. you and i both know it will dwindle as they play out of town teams and start to lose a few more.

and for many years souths were the roosters first home game where crowds of over 25,000 were the norm, and other than anzac day, that is normally the chooks highest crowd every year

every club has "big" games.
