Dally, even in the 80's when they had success, money etc they weren't as popular as Parramatta, Canterbury etc I'm not saying Souths aren't popular, they are, but alot of there popularity today is due to the Russell factor.

really only 89.

if souths have a run like easts have had since 96 with consecutive finals appearances they will be the biggest club in sydney by far on crowds.

they got around 15,000 last year just for making the semis. if that becomes regular and they win a comp. 30,000 should be easy.

remember, last GF win / appearance was 71.

even if its due to crowe, who cares?

other clubs should get high profile celebs involved?

manly had wendy harmer and sarah murdoch pushing their memberships.

Souths are far more popular then Easts, totally agree, but imagine if Parra or the Saints also had the Roosters success? hmmm. Lol at wendy harmer. But again if anyside has great success, the facilities to hold big numbers they will be popular. This has cursed Parra and St George for a while now.

hahahaha lol Souths have had good crowds for like 2 years outta 25, who gives a f**k about memberships, if it weren't for Russell being a well known actor nobody would've given a sh*t.

Yeah, 6,500 people forked out for season passes because Russ told them to do it.

Donkey.

Yeah 11,000 saw them in Jacksonville because they all liked Rugby League lol Russ is a big reason for there popularity.

So you truely believe that because people may have liked Russ, 6,500 of them forked out a few hundred each for season passes, and a few thousand more forked out to be members?

If you follow the AFL quota of the big 4.

Imo NRL's Big 4 in sydney is Canterbury, Parramatta, Dragons and Souths.

I'd drop Dragons and put Roosters in.

From afar I would say in descending order:

Dogs
Roosters
Eels
Wests
Souths
St George
Penrith
Manly
Cronulla

But it's all subjective and just an opinion.

Rooosters are 5th with Tigers 6th

Easts would be higher if they had a junior league and less fairweather supporters.

Wests have the potential to be top 4.

That happens with all sides. Apparently Parra and Saints are hugely popular in Brisbane, can anyone confirm this?

Parra, Saints and Bulldogs all have a massive following up here.

Bulldogs and Parra especially, and I think one of the main reasons for that is the fact that they were so successful in the NSWRL during the 1980's. People the vintage of my old man (circa 50 years old) and similar often supported their own BRL team along with one of the successful Sydney clubs, and many of them kept that support going strong despite the inception of the Broncos.

Matches against the Eels, Dragons and Dogs usually mean that at least 40% of the crowd are opposition supporters at Suncorp, sometimes more!

Its a matter of opinion whether or not our supporters are fair weathered - we finished out of the 8 last year yet we've been able to sign up 5000 members before the season kicked off.

If you were to base argument on juniors, then why is Souths in the top 4. They have no juniors. They have an agreement with Souths Juniors to bring players up through SSDRLFC. Yet Souths Juniors is made up of South Sydney, Eastern Suburbs and Newtown Juniors).

We're the oldest surviving club, won the 3rd most amount of premierships, produced the most internationals, won the most games, we are in the money, we've been competitive in every decade bar the 1950's. Seems like one of the biggest imo.

Souths are more popular, the Roosters are outdrawn by rival supporters most of the time at there home games, hence why there crowd averages are so good. Even in the trial match up here, it was a Roosters home game yet they were outnumbered 3 to 1 by Parra supporters.
