A reduction in sh*tty Sydney clubs...
on geographic critera any sydney clubs that are next to each other are equally good options to merge. but geography shouldn't be the sole reason, it shouldn't be a reason at all. and souths and easts make no sense beyond being next to each other. i explained why souths doesn't need any other team and i explained why manly and easts would be a better option.no, i said i wanted mergers to allow for the growth of the game nationally
i said that south and easts made the most sense, especially geographically.
i never said geographically should be the sole reason.
do you accept that on the geographic criteria, there is no better match than souths and easts?
The women of league round, should include free entry for all mums. We need to continue to grow our female base and this would help.
I would also do a International cultures round. Offer $5 tickets to anyone who shows there foreign passport. Then build it around a week of celebrating different cultures in the world.
1. It's spelled "racist".Sexist.
Rascist.
1. It's spelled "racist".
2. His idea was discounts for anyone with a foreign passport. People with foreign passports are all kinds of races. So it is not racist in any way.
And Eels Dude, someone discriminating against you would be an idiotist.
P.S. Try getting that PC wooden spoon out of your arse. It's easier to walk that way.
how does it not make geographic sense?
Souths have money, memberships, crowds, juniors. We don't need to merge. As I pointed out with Manly and Easts, they both don't have a combination of those things, and the fact that they're both seen as the "snob" teams, it would make sense if they merged. If they wanted to.
Souths have zero reason to merge.
A reduction in sh*tty Sydney clubs...
A correction, Souths have no juniors..
nice evasion of the question.
again, from a geographic perspective does it make sense?
Of course geographically merging Souths and Easts makes total sense.
We share a border and the class differences that used to exist between South Sydney areas and Easts areas are diminishing greatly.
Many of Easts fans are the working class of the Eastern Suburbs of old and as that demographic has shrunk, we're going to struggle to attract fans into the future.
But what has hit us will hit Souths as well due to the increase in wealth in the Inner City and the fact that large sections of what was Souths territory is now the neaveaux riche / gay / young upwardly mobile section of Sydney. The working class that Souths got their massive fanbase from has shrunken dramatically and the West has claimed that demographic.
Unless Souths can appeal to a new class of supporter, their massive supporter base will shrink as Easts shrank with the gentrification of the Ocean coast regions of the Eastern Suburbs. We had to go after different fans.
That's not to say they can't do it, after all, with Russell and Peter there, Souths are modelling themselves upon Easts and getting with the times. Something that I personally applaud them for. But they won't ever admit to this.
The real challenge in a merger between our two clubs is that the vast majority of our supporters cant stand each other or what each others club stands for.
Souths still put themselves forward as the "peoples club" and the club that stands by the battlers etc and their work amongst the Aboriginal community is a testiment to that desire to keep part of themselves close to their roots. They hate the Eastern Suburbs wealthy club, and the Mark Bouris's of this World, and they would never agree to a merger.
Easts to a degree are what they are because of Souths. We're a club that traditionally has bought because Souths stole our Juniors. We were forced into buying them back and they hated us for having the money to do it. So we don't love them for this either.
A merger between our clubs wont happen in a million years and I get the impression both clubs would rather shut their doors than get together to save themselves.
In all seriousness I don't think we should be expecting too much from the IC in the short term. It's going to take some time to set up and fix the little things wrong with the game at the official level before there'll probably be any dramatic changes. Ideally, I think the main thing the IC should aim at is expand so we have an 18 club competition, with clubs from the Central Coast and Perth being the logical choices. Secondly, work to maximise the revenue for our next tv deal. Once that's done we can look at increasing the salary cap. Other than that the schedule for rep games could be looked at, though it's hard to find a schedule that pleases everybody.
