Despite the game here having all the advantages it doesn’t have in other parts of the world it still can’t move beyond its small minded mentality, lacking ambition and courage. We’ve only really had two periods in time when it looked like we might actually become what we could be. in the 80’s when the game moved from a state league and brought in canberra and brisbane, then in the mid 90’s when we finally looked like becoming a national sport. Now we are back to our small minded thinking, lack of ambition and cowardice despite all the money the game now has. Abandoning the international game and back to focussing on two states. Such is rugby league.

You just gotta have the major capital cities represented. Regardless if theres AFL there. There are still Basketball and Soccer teams despite AFL. NRL really should focus on relocating some Sydney teams to certain cities and regions rather than over-expanding.

You gotta be able to pay for it. You cite basketball and soccer teams, I’ll add in union. All notable for being troubled leagues with teams regularly going out of business. The same problem for all these teams is not pulling enough $ out of the local markets directly, or through television. Not despite, but *in the face* of the AFL.

The NRL’s a lot bigger fish but also a lot more expensive to run. Its current logic is to become the dominant financial behemoth of Australian sport it could be by first making sure there’s nothing left on the table in QLD and NZ and only then going after the hard stuff.

i liken the argument about Brisb 2 before perth to what the awful did in 2011/2012 , going with the midgets & thuns before tasmania except in the reverse.
The awfuls ego & overated sense of their own success with expansion is looking like it was a mistake with neither side doing much to " grow" the game . The question is wether the extra revenue $$ in media deals are covering the operating shortfalls for these 2 clubs & I'd suggest they're not. Now Tasmania wouldn't be growing the game as you're fishing where the fish are , but you wouldn't have teams playing to empty stadiums & no one on TV , & the Tasmanian team would be paying for itself at least.

So if we are expanding at all , maybe the NRL's more conservative approach is the best one for the times

We're 'only' talking about two cities in Perth and Adelaide, that is the shortfall between most sports in Australia and the NRL, in regard to a national comp. The league would have to financially prop those clubs up that are coerced to relocate there, like the AFL did the Swans for decades, in order for those clubs to ultimately root into acceptance and sufficient fandom.

the swans have had up to 60K members recently & play to crowds of 35K , yet still barely make ends meet. The Lions posted multi million dollar loss after loss after loss .. shortly after making 4 GF' in a row s & winning 3 premierships in a row

the Storm are the most successful on field team in any code in the country yet would go broke tomorrow without financial assistance.

maybe we need to accept expansion teams in non heartland markets just don't work.

National competition is mandatory for a top-flight sport. Can't go back to existing as a NSWRL only or combination of NSWRL and QRL suburban clubs. There is the feeder existence there, and historical importance. But for a national comp, theres just no way else but to relocate Sydney clubs and continue to financially prop up those interstate clubs via the TV money and national/international investors. Until one day in the future they can be self-sufficient.

It’s $250mill a year behind afl, staying where we are isn’t going to close that gap.

ts more akin to them bringing in fremantle and port Adelaide. We’re just 30 years behind!
swans are profitable, get one of the lower grants in afl and have the largest active supporter base in Sydney!

what “financial assistance“ are the Storm getting? They certainly don’t need $5mill a year to stay afloat from a pokie den like some heartland clubs still do.

its very naive, and very rugby league, to believe we can close the gap on afl by just adding more clubs to our existing markets and not go for a national Capital city footprint.

brisbane2 is a no brainer, and 25 years kate, but the next club has to be an investment in the future growth of new markets, be it perth, nz or Adelaide. I’d put it to tender for those three locations and see who can present the strongest bid.

mandatory?

says who ?

theres 14.5 Million people in NSW ACT & QLD
& another 5 Million in NZ
more then enough people to service a viable comp
