Coote is the best backrower i've seen..Raper was just before my time, but people i respect say he was better..

$BW has all the weapons needed to be in the top 5 of all time, but off field controversy at the start of his career, plus the fact that he has only played 90 first grade games, means his stats say he shouldn't be considered..

I'm glad he plays for my club..

The old timers got away with murder in their day.

Journos were not obtrusive like they are now and often drank and socialised with the players.

There were no mobile phones, internet , RBT etc in the good old days.

Apart from walking out on the dogs, SBW only other incident was involving the Clovelly Hotel, no big deal really...

I realise you are trying to be inflammatory, but i'll answer anyway..

Off field issues, barring serious cases, shouldn't come in to the equation, but in cases like $BW's where he doesn't have the first grade games under his belt to qualify otherwise, come in to the picture..

Longevity in the game is one part of the equation that is non-negotiable IMO..

I don't know you, so i'll trust the people whose opinions i've trusted for over 40 years, over yours..

I love what $BW has done for the club, but to put him above an Immortal in Raper, and someone like Coote (who'll eventually be there) is premature..

If $BW hadn't've left the game then i may be singing a different tune..

I'd argue he is the most talented backrower ever, but that is a completely different discussion.

SBW would be the first back rower picked in a current “world 17” and that is fact. He is more gifted and more a natural athlete than any other back rower I have ever seen. There are a lot I haven’t seen and comparing different eras is always hard so greatest of all time is a tough discussion.

As for “resume’s”, I fail to see how that is relevant to the discussion. There are some bog average players that have won one or more premierships and then there are greats who have won 0 or 1

Hindmarsh is obviously shit because he didn't win a premiership. No one is ever going to agree on his greatness, but he is the best 2nd rower I have ever seen. He will never have the legacy of someone like Johns because of him leaving and the way he left. But if he had his whole career in Rugby League he could easily have been the greatest ever

Valheru is 100% correct. When it comes to football ability, SBW stands alone. Fat Krion, may have seen Raper play, he was before my time, so that is why I didn't include him in my list.
Ron Coote, was a great Eastern Suburbs legend, I saw him play, and he was a wonderful defensive player, and was quite skilful.
But he didnt offload, like SBW, he didnt attract 3-4 players in defence, nor did he break the line, or put players into gaps, as regularly as SBW does.
Players like Ron Coote, Ray Price, Bradley Clyde will have better CV's than him, because sonny left to play another sport for 5 years, and was a success .
It's a lot more difficult becoming a duel international in rugby , playing for the All Blacks, than it is for the wallabies.

Horrid I never said they weren't champion players of their era but I will bring it back to a car analogy.


The Ford phase 2 & 3 GT was the fastest production car in the world when it was manufactured in the 70's and won Bathurst easily...however if it was to race today it would be lapped.
