The rabbitohs are by far leading the recruiment for 2009

Garrett Crossman--Workhorse prop; 2007 premiership winner with Melb storm

Colin Best--Proven strike rate, good leap for the ball, very athletic and a huge outside back

Rhys Wesser--Proven tryscorer, speed machine

Kane Cleal--Possibly the most aggressive forward in the NRL, SBW rated him in 08 as one of the biggest improvers, despite multiple clubs never sustained an injury while at the rabbitohs

Chris McQueen--105kg back and over 6 foot; came down from the wynnum club from Queensland, and has already broke a few machines at Redfern.

Shaune Corrigan--Proven tryscorer, good leap for the ball, one of the fastest backs around.

Matt Mundine--Toyota Cup Lock of the year, can play multiple positions, still only 18 and locked up for next two years.

The introduction of two oustanding NYC players to the NRL squad this year, Jason Clarke and David Tyrell. Jason makes over 30 tackles a game and is often rated the next alan tongue, while David plays in the second row, is over 6 foot 3 and weighs in over 105kilos. Both highly skilled youngsters with petrol to burn.

If the rabbitohs could make the top eight in 2007 with sh*tty halves and a backline older than a T-ford; there is no reason why this side below can't grab that trophy this year.

If he carries on the way he is from all accounts, whoever has that "Danny Wicks for fattest man in NRL banner will have to change it."
Exactly. There is a very good reason the dragons let Matt Mundine go..

He has so much potential but his attitude will let him down.

Worst=Penrith
Gavin Cooper is a decent buy.
Shane Elford is a ridiculous signing though.

We were cleaning out all the older guys with nothing left to offer the club, then go and sign an even older player, who is injury prone and even at full fitness has less to offer then the guys we didnt want to keep... not to mention all the juniors just waiting to make a name for themselves in first grade. :(

Yeah I was just going to say... if there was a ladder for this competition Penrith take the wooden spoon. I spose they have a lot of upcoming talent though.

Dogs probably take it out simply because of the money they have floating around. William Zillman was a good pick up for the Titans I reckon. Not sure about Presto at fullback.

How did Jesse Royal get released and not picked up?

Jessie got offered a great deal to work and play Newcastle district footy while earning a combined salary plenty better than what the Knights were offering. The work also sets the bloke up for life after footy.

I reckon it's one of the massive issues within the game. Plenty of quality who could add depth to the NRL are all to willing to play in the Brisbane comp, not train full time, and have the ability to earn more from other employment. This will always be the case as long as the minimum wage in NRL contract is set at its current amateur levels.

Try these examples for size.

For the 2007 NFL season, the minimum salary for a American NFL (Gridiron)rookie is $285,000. The minimum salary increases according to the number of years the player has been in the league. The highest minimum salary is $820,000 for players who have been in the league 11 years or more.
The minimum salary structure for 2007 was as follows:
  • Rookies and first-year players $285,000
  • Second-year players $360,000
  • Third-year $435,000
  • Fourth-year $510,000
  • Fifth- through seventh-year $595,000
  • Eighth- through tenth-year $720,000
  • Eleventh-year and longer $820,000
Ours is around $55,000. Jessie Royal is among the many, his dream is over, time for reality - food on the table for the family.

Oh and for the signings thing - The Dogs, but they needed to be. he Broncos have lost too much front row talent over the past two years Webcke, Civo and now Hannant, the purchases they've made do not appear to cover for this.

FFS why the hell do people still compare the NRL to american sports?

when the NRL can generate anywhere near the amount of cash the NFL can then players will make more money

Well , in my opinion the best signing for my club was not player related, a new coach in Daniel Anderson, and the replacement of someone who obviously did not want to be there and sent the roster backwards. May take a couple of years to get to where we need to be, but was more important than any player recruitment.

I don't really get why people are saying Brisbane....yes they have bought one of the best centres in the league but they've lost like two first grade wingers,a hooker and a couple of forwards/utilities,that's a bit of a loss not to mention their only and hugely succcessful coach...

Anyway I think the Warriors have done very well as have the Cows(in all areas) and the Dragons did pretty well.

Pretty easy, the NFL is the benchmark in world sport for key result areas such as attendance, merchandise sales and TV syndication. It's a professional sport that looks after its players. All benchmark sports should be looked at to improve our own and find out how our code can better itself.

I'm a realist and I'm not saying that the NRL needs to pay a base of 300 large however, if Jessie Royal is a professional sportsman (meaning he trains professionally 10 times a week preventing him the opportunity to collect another working wage) and certain people out there in Rugby League Land think he's only worth $55K per year... never mind that $55K is not going encourage fringe players with ability and families to take the risk, give up their jobs to train hard and play footy on a season deal that doesn't cover a mortgage.

Well if you still think $55K is all Jessie's worth as a pro league player, you're under valuing the code, and that kind of thinking is just an indication of some of the thought processes that are holding back our great game.

Not really, theres a thing called the salary cap, if you look at other players on the roster, im sure there are many better than him that deserve a bigger chunk out of that cap. I'm sure alot of us out there who would agree that perhaps players should get paid more, but the reality is they can't, clubs are struggling as it is at the moment... The whole "lets just throw massive amounts of dollars" school of thought is more detrimental to the game than some footy supporter saying they feel a "Pro" player is worth $55k.

St George by a mile ..two reasons ..

1. Bennett and his fitness coaches from Brisbane and other coaching staff replacing Brown and McGregor.

2. Tough forwards like Smith, Costigan, Priddis and Weyman will give the side more mongrel than they've had for 20 years or more.
