Who do we need to recruit in 2018?

A mild rumour is that we are considering looking at Albert Kelly if we don't nab an Australian based replacement for Moses

There is a lot of talent across the board off-contract for next season and I hope we can finally "play the game" in a way that sees us rebuild with long term success top of mind, but with the real prospect of short term competitiveness being a reality. Here are the 16 WT players coming off contract;
Matt Ballin, Joel Edwards, Tim Grant, Watson Heleta, Justin Hunt, Jamal Idris, Jack Littlejohn, Kyle Lovett, Matt McIlwrick, Mitchell Moses, Kevin Naiqama, David Nofoaluma, Jordan Rankin, Ava Seumanufagai, James Tedesco, Aaron Woods
If we leave aside Woods, Tedesco (decisions pending) and Moses (already gone)...then in my opinion the only players out of the 16 that demand re-signing are; McIlwrick, Nofa, Ava & Grant.
Fullback: A lot will depend on whether we keep Tedesco but if we don't we'll have even more cash to play with and I can't see a better option than Michael Gordon, he's playing well at the moment and will be a big net gain in terms of dollars and if Tedesco does go to the Roosters then it's a bo-brainer for mine. If Tedesco goes to Canterbury then we could still chase him as the Roosters won't dig too deep as they probably see Latrell as a long term FB anyway. The other option is Dugan who is off contract and if Saints re-sign Widdop on the reported offer of $2.2m for 3y on top of Hunt then they will probably not be able to afford Dugan as well. Alex Johnston from Souths is another off contract option but Souths should be able to retain him so he is unlikely I would think.
Outside Backs: Aaron Gray (Souths) would come pretty cheap and I thought he had a really good year a couple of years back and Will Chambers (Storm) are both off contract. Chambers would cost more but he's accomplished, tough and a very solid defender, he wouldn't be too cheap though and the Storm rarely lose anyone they really want to retain. Another off-contract player is Kirisome Auva'a who ripped us apart on Monday. He's off contract but has baggage. In addition to this we look as though we've agreed to terms with Taane Milne (Saints).
Halves: Everyone knows the halves situation; Cronk, Foran, Widdop, Reynolds are the big names and we'll all just have to wait for the game of chess to play out....but as someone already mentioned above I wouldn't mind Tyrone Roberts he's a very good goal-kicker and a good general play kicker. Him and Brooks would be a competent halves pairing with ability and potential and they would only take up a comparitively small amount of cap compared to what most clubs end up paying for their 6s & 7s...so it would allow us to strengthen up in other positions.
Forwards: Likely that Matulino is coming and McQueen is signed so some depth on the way already. Another GUN worth chasing that would add X factor is Nelson Asofa-Solomona (Storm) - Wow imagine if we could get this huge unit (but I doubt it). Other notables worth a look some have experience and others are promising; Robbie Rochow (Souths), Aiden Guerra (Roosters) offer some experience and Jai Arrow (Broncos) and Zane Tetevano (Roosters) are both on the up but struggling for opportunity at their clubs...they are up-tempo, have good leg drive and are both physical.
It's a Good Year to be in the market and hopefully we have the right coach to do the shopping!

Dont forget - we also need to sign a stack of depth, because as it stands right now, we dont have any at all.....

Well there is at least 8 "on contract" players staying....Aloiai, Lawrence, Suli, Brooks, Felise, E.Taylor, Sue, Liddle and if you allow for 4 x graduates from Toyota Cup - U 20's = 12 + McIlwrick, Ava, Grant & Nofa = 16...Then we're looking for between 9 & 11 new players to make the 25. 9 if Woods and Tedesco stay - 11 if they go.

So thats plenty right?
I think they are talking about increasing the top 25 to a top 30 as well?

Really - Up to 30 next year! That will really make the player market even more volatile, although I suppose most clubs will simply hold on to some additional U20 players who are too old for U20s but not really expected to make it big time.

Also - It is probably not another 9 or 11 players if we believe that Matulino, McQueen (confirmed) and Milne are all signed. It's 6 - 8 new signings.

I dont think its confirmed, but it was one of the concessions that the NRL wanted for increasing the cap.

What do you (and others) think about Michael Gordon IF Teddy goes....
He probably hasn't got a lot of years in front of him, but he's reliable, solid, can still attack, safe under the high ball and a great goal kicker. Not to mention a seasoned professional who is not a sook!

If we lose Teddy I like Gordon.
For all the reasons you said, and him being older means we need to find a successor, but he gives us 2 or 3 years to do so.

With his attitude and form recently he's not the sort of player I'd want at my club. He seems like he doesn't give a shit and that's as captain. I used to think he was one of the few tigers who really have 100% and cared about the club but he has since proven that to be horribly wrong. He isn't worth close to the prices being thrown around.

My only concern is that his departure may encourage Teddy to follow suit.

Cleary knows there's no need to hit the panic buttons. We r in a powerful position to recruit quality players due to the fact we've only signed a small portion of the 30(apparently nrl squad has increased to a top 30) for next season.

More importantly we have an enormous amt of money to spend with moses teddy & woods leaving plus the additional 950k tied up in Farah & the softcock sironen.

Losing Teddy is an absolute nightmare. We can build a team around Teddy. Woods is an average prop with minimal impact. Losing him to a club willing to pay more than us is great news.

No Tedesco and no Woods means more money for Cronk. We'd be crazy to not even pick up the phone and have a chat.

Woods is an unintelligent fraudster.I hope the mercenary removes the tattoo of the leichhardt postcode b4 he joins the belmore grubs.I suppose he will replace it with one containing a term of affection for Klemmentine !!

He can go..He was playing crap anyway....Always been a plodder in my eyes......
against Parra he was taking the ball up from 5 metres.no intent.
The tattoo will read "my darling Klementine"
Looks like Teddys off too...that hurts.....
Heard today Matulino has agreed to terms with us.......(cooling off period in place now) more aggro than Hillbilly,so thats good.

I just hope the fans are patient with Ivan Cleary this year seems like a year where he has to do his best. Next year he can start recruiting a team he wants and probably year after he can make them gel. Probably won't be until 2019 we start seeing consistant footy. Especially if tedasco leaves. Even if we recruit good players to replace them may take time for them to gel.
