Who do we need to recruit in 2018?

McQueen was a dumb buy in my opinion. But if you're going to play him, he has to play 80. He offers zero impact. His only attribute is that he can play 80 comfortably in the back row. Probably because he doesn't do anything.

I dont think you can compare the position the club was in when McQueen signed and the position they are in now.

McQueen signed under Taylor where money was being saved to retain existing players. I dont criticize the club for this signing, in hindsight it may not be what is best now and the money could have been used elsewhere better, but I dont think he is that bad. I dont think every player needs to have impact, some just need to toil away and do their job and if they do this well sometimes you dont even notice.

For sure you need those types of players, but we've already got ET for that. This is why we now can't even entertain buying Guerra.

We can't have a backrow of McQueen, Guerra and ET. They are essentially all workhorses with zero running impact.

McQueen imo is a bench player. Can cover centre and back row, so no need for a small body on the bench.

One spot on the bench should be set aside for a utility. They may not be a huge impact but he can defend well enough and runs decent enough lines.

Lawrence is better in most facets. I'm glad to see that Lawrence isn't being used as a battering ram anymore.

MU - the problem that I see with the bench if that we have Liddle as well.

So one backrower/utility and one dummy half means we only have space for 2 props. I also think MCK could do the same job as McQueen.

I assume the bench will be something like:-

14. Aloiai -- prop replacement
15. Sue -- prop replacement
16. Liddle
17. McQueen -- I reckon MCK could slot in here just as well.

To me it would be better if we had a player instead of McQueen who would have some impact.

I think a lot of this comes down to where we play Idris. Idris is our main edge impact player. Suli is also looking good.

I'm not worried yet but we really need some gun outside backs if we want to have a solid team next year.

Liddle doesn't fit into my side next year unfortunately

Basically Mcillwrick has played out of his skin and I think he deserves the 80 min hooking role

Unless Cleary persists with him on the bench, well then I dunno

100% agree hindsight is a wonderful thing, possibly Corey Harawira-Naera, Angus Crichton or even Chris Grevsmuhl would fit the bill and not break the bank.

He doesn't run hard, he's not particularly skillful. He doesn't hit a hole. He's good in the air as a backrower, that seems to be his only trick.

I'd love to hear what it is people think McQueen adds to the team? Experience? Is that it.
I agree RR.Hes past his best & approaching 30 & a 3 yr contract for him is not savvy recruiting.I was hoping & expecting us to drop out of the running for his signature after the SuperCoach Taylor was sacked. The 400k/yr could've been used a heck of a lot more wisely.

Mightn't have much choice but fit Liddle into the side with parra making mcilwrick a very competitive offer.I will b disappointed if we lose him & it's highly likely he will b playing for the same team as the wanka moses.

Crichton certainly looks the goods & has been one of souffs best this season.Dont know if he's off contract but he'd b definitely worth chasing.

Forget grevsmuhl as he has major off field issues.

The way I see it a few clubs will be in serious cap strife if other clubs fail to pick up their offerings, so hang back and wait till they are forced to trade some quality. As much as a like Cleary's vision of assembling a team of hard en pros, you still need game breakers and outside Brooks the cupboard is bare come 2018 for game breakers

I agree we need some game breakers as well. I think though Nofo, Suli & Idris all fit into that category. Brooks does as well. I still think we need some more players like that though.

I've been calling to chase CHN for weeks now and he's off contract. Crichton would be good as well. We need a good hole runner ( that sounds so much more rude than I meant).

Is Matt linked to parra? Real shame if true. That's why we had to be quick to sign him up because each week goes by his price rises

I wouldn't be disappointed if Liddle played hooker though obviously, he's the future imo. Just at this current stage matt is the better option

Yeah I hope we sign MM quickly

I agree - I would find any decision to let MM go very surprising...In fact it would be something that Jason Taylor would do!!!!!

With Ballin off contract and Liddle still inexperienced letting MM go wouldn't seem to make any sense unless some other club is throwing ridiculously huge overs at him...and I can't see that being the case.

If MM were to go we would still need to sign a hooker....you can't go into a season with only one hooker! And why spend more on a new one, when the one we have is going so well and presumably wouldn't be too costly considering number 9 is part of the spine.

C'mon Ivan let's re-sign MM!!

Lol no he's not

Happy to be proven wrong

I honestly don't think it's far fetched at al l to say Mcillwrick is probably the most inform hooker atm. He just won't be getting any mentions because he's a nobody

He was trying, he's just in shithouse form.

And I still stand by this quote after tonight.

He's f**king poor, but he's having a go, stats don't say everything. Made a few decent tackles in the second half which showed commitment.

Tedesco was the one I thought dogged it tonight.
