The difference was Ben Johnson had three Origin players in his spine as well as a handful of others spread throughout the team.

None of the other runners who raced that day had anywhere near as many high quality players in their squads, which is probably why Ben Johnson played in four straight NRL grand finals.

Maybe if he didn't want to get caught he should have stopped hoarding all the best players, and allowed some of the weaker runners to sign some.

But Melbourne's lack of dominance just means they aren't certainties to make the grand final.

I'm actually pretty excited about this year's finals series. Unlike last year it's packed with good teams and it's anyone's title. Except the Knights.

Melbourne without Blair; Manly without Stewart and a couple of others; the Warriors facing the Broncos without Thaiday and Hoffman; Saints finding some form at the right time. Yup from memory only Calvin smith and one or two others had a clean career from that final most of them tested positive to something, or were documented/proven to be on something, at some point (ben Johnson, linford Christie, dennis Mitchell and desai Williams - for steroids and Carl Lewis at one point for pseudo-ephedrine).
