It's a straight 3 years and yes, no one else of the Toovey class wanted to come.

its still up in the air over whether Toovey is a good coach or not. He inherited a great team from Hasler which pretty much coached itself and then lasted 2 more years with deteriorating results. Wouldnt say hes a class coach just yet.

Im thinking Justin Morgan has been made culpable for the defensive woes since he is no longer required and Cappy is still here. Wonder how compartmentalised each role is? Did Cappy have a say in defensive structures?

I think they're keeping Cappy for his revolutionary thinking - wings as middle forwards, edge back-rowers as middle forwards, best middle forward on the bench, impact backs on the bench, extra time specialists... all to keep us one step ahead

Our defence crumbled to bits the year Bluey took over as coach, wasn't Wiki our defensive coach and was sent home and told they would give him a call if he was required, its never really recovered.

Justin Morgan goes from a club that leaked only 348 points to one that spilled out 601 the very next year.

But yeah, it's probably his fault we defended like chumps. McFadden gets to be an assistant while a guy that actually has credentials is told to sling his hook and basically had the finger pointed at him for our season.

I bet Morgan uttered 'f**king amateurs' under his breath as he drove out of the gates for the last time.

so you what you are implying is that the defensive structures that worked at JMs last club were too complicated for our players. That they are as thick as pigshit. Its quite possible.

Having said that, Cleary managed to teach his teams how to defend well and i wouldnt say his players were all Einsteins.

Most defensive plans involve players coming across covering the inside so theres no gap. And most successful defensive plans involve a lot of trust that that man is going to be there otherwise the whole structure falls down. If the man next to him doesnt trust someone is covering his inside then he will make a choice that will stuff it all up. However most of our tries are from our dumbass wingers and centres not talking and leaving huge gaps through making solitary decisions rather than a group decision. No talk is the main issue out in the backs. Thats what needs to be fixed up to stop the soft tries.

Maybe Morgan should have dumbed it down. Who knows. Players escape a lot of responsibility for things but Coaches know that they are going to be the first one looking at the bullet. Its part of the job.

Kearney, McFaddon, Kidwell, Jones, Cleary maybe at the Kiwis, Henry as a mentor...it all sounds like coaching by committee to me. There's no faith in any one person being a true leader.

Cleary has just been on Fox Sports News saying its a strange move to keep in Cappy as assistant, only other time he can recall is Rick Stone at Knights when Bennett took over.
"They must have talked it over and decided that's the plan they are going to go with, I think you would have to consider it a little bit of a risk"

He went on to say in relation to Warriors.

"I loved my time over there, left feeling like there is a little bit of unfinished business and I guess there is a bit of a romantic notion you would like to go back and finish it off. But look it's the way it goes and they have made a decision and I'm really happy for Stephen, he has worked hard to get that job and I look forward to see how he goes."

Ums etc edited out.

Can't provide a link sorry.

I wish you hadn't posted this...it makes me physically ill. It sounds like Ivan was absolutely receptive to coming back, but instead of a guy with proven success here we've gone for someone much less successful.

I've heard this somewhere before but I feel like there is bad blood with Ivan and Wayne Scurrah, therefore bad blood with Eric Watson who is Scurrah's bum chum (employs him now etc). So I have the feeling that might have been the reason we didn't get Ivan.

Maybe I do agree with Lion and our ownership is running us into the ground...

Oh geez, I'll retract my statement in the other thread about Ivan not being interested.

If he *was* keen then we've butchered a golden chance.

Andrew McFadden says he knew his fate as Warriors coach was sealed after the 36-24 loss to the Tigers in the penultimate match of the season.

A few days after that match, which ended the club's finals hopes for 2016, McFadden met with managing director Jim Doyle in a cafe near Mt Smart.

It was a robust discussion, when the former coach admitted his tenure was probably over.

"I let Jim know I thought it was probably time and he said he tended to agree," said McFadden. "There were lengthy discussions. I knew a whole heap of stuff had to transpire so I wasn't sure what would happen but I knew I was pretty vulnerable."

The final-round defeat to the Eels did nothing to help his cause but by then the wheels were already well in motion. Last Thursday, McFadden was told officially he would be relieved of his head coach position, and Doyle asked him to fly to Brisbane.

"I got on a plane with Jim [last] Friday," said McFadden. "He told me he wanted to bring Stephen in and wanted me to go and meet him."

McFadden and Kearney had a lengthy chat over breakfast at a Brisbane hotel, discussing how the arrangement might work.

"Stephen was open to the idea from the start," said McFadden. "He just needed him to be comfortable that I would have his back, given my situation. I assured him I as was comfortable and so was he."

After almost three seasons as the man in charge, McFadden admits it feels strange to be no longer at the helm of the Mt Smart club.

"It does feel a bit strange. I felt I had made a bit of progress. It's still a bit raw if I think about how we performed over the last month, but we will have to live with that bitter feeling for some time yet."

In another way, though, the demotion has come at the right time.

"It's a timely one," said McFadden. "With a young family, I'll enjoy the fact there will be a little bit less stress. There is also some relief that I can go back and put the attention on the group. I've always enjoyed that side of the job, working with the players and improving them and their skills. You don't get that chance as a head coach, especially here as a lot of things pull you away."

McFadden also admitted he would have walked away, if not for the ongoing support of the players.

"If I didn't feel the players wanted me to be here and have them coaching them, then I wouldn't have been interested in staying. That was the key for me."

Warriors owner Eric Watson said he was sure McFadden would rebound from this experience and be a head coach one day. The 38-year-old still retains those ambitions, but is happy at Mt Smart for now.

"I have become very attached to the club and the city," said McFadden. "We love it here as a family. It's great experience for us. [I have no idea] how long I will be here. You can never tell in football but there is still work to do."
