Why Can't the Video Ref Rule On a Forward Pass?

Ask yourself is a camera set up on the halfway the best way to judge forward passes?

So that camera positioned in the same place can judge an off-side player but it can't judge a forward pass, which necessarily involves an offside player?

Yeah. Strong argument...

Offside is a freeze frame shot. Forward pass is a moving situation, and it's not as easy to rule on.

They have tried using the VR before with ruling forward passes. Didn't work then and I don't believe it will work now.

For mine referees don't do a bad job with ruling on forward passes. Yes their will be times they will miss one. The game has lived with that for over 100 years. No system is perfect and sometimes you just have to live with it.

No we shouldn't have to just live with it.

Everyone in the world knows SBW threw that pass forward and it should have been ruled so, by the damn video ref.

Surely common sense must be used in these instances.

I can understand that they'd scrutinise every little forward pass but i mean as an example the blatant SBW forward pass goes unattended.

More curious as to what the real reason behind this is, rather than have a whinge about it, but it does bring another grey mark on the whole issue of referring.

Because a fixed camera on the 50m line isn't suitable for determining whether a pass travelled forward or not.

I remember a St George fan in about 2012 who was adamant that a try was scored off a forward pass in the 99 GF. Another member here posted an overhead angle that clearly showed it wasn't.

1 day technology will be able to determine if the the ball is passed backwards. Until then, forget it.

A long ball, passed back but floating forward will get pulled up even more if an incompetent & impractical video ref gets his hands on the decision

The issue that some people forget is that the pass is judged on the direction of the hands when the pass is thrown.

As far as camera angles are concerned.

That being the case, does that mean the only people in the crowd who can make an informed comment on whether a pass is forward or not are the ones who are sitting in line with it?

Pretty much.

Wonder if those drone cameras hovering above play could ever help

We either live with the occasional forward pass being missed or we change the rule to be the same with what happens with kicks. Where the kicker can put others, who at the moment of the kick are offside, onside by running through and doing so.

So if the passer, who could be running flat out when he passes the ball keeps running at speed, remains in front of the player receiving the pass when that player receives the pass then the pass is not ruled forward even if it went forward.

Simple isn't it.

So SBW's pass was so blatantly forward that no one picked it up live and only decided it was forward after the most unflattering camera angle... Riiight. Sour grapes much??

It all happened so quick but it was undoubtedly forward.

Ya see those sorta short ones ( from dummy half) let go every 10 mins.

I wonder if it were possible put a GPS transponder in the ball and had fixed receivers on the four corners of the field if that would work? Or would it still struggle on balls passed backward but travelling forward I wonder.
