Why Can't the Video Ref Rule On a Forward Pass?

There's always questions of where do you draw the line but I'd love it if when they see a blatantly forward pass they could just be like nope.jpg and say no try.

Thank you. At least one poster who wants video replay acknowledges the downside with more stoppages and takes away the fluidness of the contest.

I notice most posters have ignored this point. And anyone who wants to bring in Captains Challenge- I say FORGET ABOUT IT!!!!!!!!:x

A player can face his own try line, pass the ball towards his opponents goal-line, the direction of his hand though still is backward whilst, still throwing a forward pass. The pass that somehow drifts forward, the magic eyes that discern the fingertips, from where ever those eyes might be, are to absolve referees from bad decisions. A forward pass is whenever a passed ball travels toward the opponents goal line.

Completely incorrect

So SBW's pass was so blatantly forward that no one picked it up live and only decided it was forward after the most unflattering camera angle... Riiight. Sour grapes much??

Agreed, that camera angle showing it was clearly forward was most unflattering.

Yet you just used video to show that it can be done.

This video is why video refs can rule on them. In many cases better than the crowd and/or officials - as the video illustrates.

Thats amazing that you derived that from that video.

Just out of interest- I have read the NRL trialed video replay for forward pass for one season and then scrapped it. What year did this occur?

Also Craig Bellamy has called for video ref for forward pass to be introduced again. But they can only get one or two looks at it before ruling. As someone who is concerned about delays in the game- I would probably be more open to that suggestion.

This thread answered the question for me. My apologizes to the moderator- I did a google search on the topic and then I found a old thread which I posted the question thinking it was the new thread on the topic which covered the Sonny Bill Williams forward pass.

Once again sorry for my mistake.

You couldn't easily see that the last pass they show is not forward, despite it being a text book example of what is disputed?

So video shows a ball looks to be travelling forward even though its not and you want to use footage that makes it look like it's going forward as proof it isn't

Right? I'm glad we f**king well cleared that one up

They need to have a way of tracking the speed of the ball towards the tryline before and after the ball leaves the hand. If it increases it is a forward pass.

On a 2D screen it sometimes looks forward when it isn't, also video-refs are taking up too much time during the match. Also stop video-refs from adjudicating on obstructions too please.

Turn your sound on. Watch it again.

We either live with the occasional forward pass being missed or we change the rule to be the same with what happens with kicks. Where the kicker can put others, who at the moment of the kick are offside, onside by running through and doing so.

So if the passer, who could be running flat out when he passes the ball keeps running at speed, remains in front of the player receiving the pass when that player receives the pass then the pass is not ruled forward even if it went forward.

Simple isn't it.

So he could then intentionally lob it forward, like a chip kick, over the defensive line, for his outside runner to catch this horrendous forward 'pass', meanwhile run through the line himself to put his runner onside and thus be a legitimate pass...

Personally I think it is more to do with ref incompetence / inconsistency than anything, for some reason less muck ups in union on forward passes being called incorrectly (although still more than a few called incorrectly).

Bigger issue to me is the complete incompetence in referees judging what is a knock on versus gone backwards. That ship is all over the place.

And for either case, video ref getting involved is not the answer ... way too much reliance on them already.

Just an observation from watching a tonne of union and league over a long period of time.

Not sure why you find that funny. Small minds easily amused, or perhaps just a dick?

Forward passes are more common in yawnion than penalty goals or patches on the elbows of their tweed jackets.
