Why does Sydney media hate rugby league?

One of the major problems is the number of journalists and media knobs who come to Sydney as the Big Smoke from the southern states or Victorian bush towns to further their career ( see Koch and half of Ch7 News)

Who on earth from Sydney or Brisbane is going to voluntarily go to bleak city

Most of the so called players in AFL in western Sydney are the children of parents from interstate. I have some team close to me that is supposedly making inroads, they have 3 junior teams with the teams covering 2 years eligibility to get the numbers required for a side.

What they do is throw money, a player that did play both games was accepted into an age talent squad in league, he played AFL on Sunday's, to keep him he was offered 3 times what you would get as initial school aged incentive at either Parra or the Riff.
He is still there but would like to come back to league , but missing 2 years teenage competition makes it difficult. They keep overfunding AFL in the western suburbs, but for how long

DT bashing aside, in all seriousness how could you be a Sydney sports journalist and not get stuck into RL? Fair dinkum it is the gift that keeps on giving. These blokes are good for a bad news story at least once every two to three weeks, and that's just off the pitch.

And that is the perception that they create. The reality is league is no worse than AFL, NFL in the USA or soccer overseas. However league incidents have a huge amount of sensationalism around them compared to AFL.
Also don't forget alot of these incidents are exaggerated and unfortunately the players have no comeback. For example can you recall the huge bashing rugby league and Canterbury copped for the Coffs Harbour incident about 10 years ago. The players were attacked even for what they wore to an interview. The reality is they were innocent and the police new this yet the media had a field day.

Any thought that Corey Norman, Andrew Johns, Todd Carney were the second coming of The devil, then you would never know that AFL players are far worse.

There is a code that you don't criticise the code for fear of being banned, if you know anybody that is under 30, lives in Melbourne and frequents pubs or nightclubs, they will tell you stories about AFL players that are far worse than anything that the Terrorgraph sensationalises.

The stranglehold that is media control in bleak city, just won't allow it to be published, some articles do get printed , only when the miscreant is in court, otherwise silence

And how can we forgot the West Tigers being accused of RAPE. Front page story 2006.

This might explain why i got banned from big footy for telling the truth.
You can see why that the Anglo-Irish game will never be a success outside of Australia. They wouldn't be able to control the media in Europe, the USA or even New Zealand.

This is true, the Herald Sun in Melbourne will use it's discretion, infact I have heard their leading AFL writer, Mark Robinson say on SEN radio in Melbourne that they get stories all the time but choose not to chase them.

Hate to say it, but AFL journos love and respect that game.

Therein lies the difference. The NRL writers who love and respect RL will never get hired.

Just a quick skim through the results section of the Telecrap today shows no results whatsoever of the NSW Cup games yesterday. All that has been published is Holden Cup.
Yet you can get detailed fumbleball results from Adelaide, Perth and the local Sydney comp div 2 and under 19s.
This is probably the rugby league's fault.

They are paid advertisements from the fumblers, but that's a good point.

No doubt their media deals force publication of minor results just to get column inches. Replicate it, NRL.

It must be killing Tony Squires doing the post-match NRL show on Fox while his beloved Swans are playing in a final.
Tony Squires is a St George man.

The incompetent coaching of his beloved Dragons is what is killing him.

Agree with the general gist of this thread- the Sydney RL media is too keen to focus on the negatives.

Funny how, the swans provide free tickets and corporate facilities to most media types in Sydney..

Even uber vouchers on saturday nights to SCG..

All of them are on the teet;

John Stanley
Tony Squires
Bec Bourbon
Jim Wilson
Chris Bath
Bill Woods
Garry Linnell
Terry Kennedy
Andrew Webster

Wonder why the get such a featherbed approach..

Came across this when I was reading Kent's article on Ron Massey.

I find Kent's response very interesting. Is anyone able to elaborate on how exactly reporting on NRL in Sydney changed after the Super League War? I was only 3 years old at the time of the super league war haha
