"Why I said no to Ricky": Lyon

Confidence is a gigantic factor in the performance of top-level sportsmen of all stripes. Find a way to strip their confidence, and watch their performance fall away.

Most if not all of the players who get selected for Origin are either the elite of the game or those who are playing at their career-best form. Enduring a consequential run of Origin defeats affects the confidence of some players dreadfully. They go back to their club teams crestfallen. They don't bounce back easily.

Not all players are affected that way, but it must be acknowledged that some are. That is without reference to the shellacking that they receive from the aggrieved fans.

I can see that some players are trying to protect their confidence, knowing that they are good for no-one without it. It's nice to be considered for rep footy, but it is club form which puts the bread on the table. If your defeats at Origin level are eating away at your week to week form, a line has to be drawn in the sand. It's an individual decision. Not every player has to make it, but for those who need to make it because they recognise the signs, the realisation is there that life without Origin goes on. Life without a club contract is not the preferred option.
This is a good post well said.

Well when he was an eel, he played in a winning team. Now he is a seagle he plays in a losing one.

Clearly it is Manly's fault NSW lose. You give the NSW team so much. Wolfman, Stewarts, Buhrer, Lyon, King and Perry. Watmough may be an exception in 2005 - but now - NSW lost that game.

Kite when playing for ST George played like a champ in origin. Since moving to Manly he was limp.

You can go through history too, Krilich, Phil Daley, Hasler, Lyons, OConnor all Origin losers overall at Manly.

It is a relevant trend.

The only exceptions are probably Roberts, Toovey and maybe Terry Hill.

I hate Manly. Bring back the Bears.

Edit: Cleal was probably more a dead heat.
:crazy:DON'T TAKE DRUGS befor you post.

Some may say pea heart, soft pubic wig, girl or whatever.
I say he's refreshingly honest, I'd rather him say his heart isn't in it than play like Gasnier last year.

Wow, that is some top shelf loser talk.

You and Homer Simpson would be father of the year.

"Can't win, don't try. Got it."

Lyons comments are refreshingly timid. But oh so refreshing.

Gasnier might not have had the best game or been the best option but he didn't dog it, he backed himself and he had a go. Regardless of what critics might have said.

I know what I would prefer to see, not only in footballers, but in people in general.

Fwiw, Lyon doesn't deserve a NSW jersey.

For those who find Lyon's unwillingness to test himself against the best opposition due to an inability to cope with criticism "refreshing", you will probably find tipping a bit of lemonade in your beer "refreshing" also.

Refreshingly honest lol in 20 years from now Lyon will be remembered as the soft c**k who walked out on his team and his state because he couldn't handle it who then went and dominated the piss weak ESL which is the standard that he belongs in, nothing more.

Yep just label it top shelf loser talk because I had a dig at Gasnier. Gasnier stunk deal with it, he gave a half arsed performance. He should have given it up too.
If Lyon couldn't give a f**k about SOO and his only ambition is to play 1st grade so be it.
He doesn't have to answer to anyone. He has achieved a shitload more than anyone here on the footy field.
What I can't stand in life and not necessarily football is people who talk the talk, but deliver sweet f**k all when it's time to perform.
Lyon doesn't have the ambition anymore, so who cares? Life goes on.
I'd prefer to pick someone who'd kill for a jersey.
The analogy with Homer Simpson would be relevant if you were talking about a high school drop out dole bludger, not a 30 yr old bloke who has spent his adulthood in 1st grade.
So legend, how many 1st grade games have you played, premierships won?

This. I still can't believe he was even considered in (08?) when he publicly said that he didn't want to play origin. I know he took it back later, but his heart was probably never in it. That whole story should've been the end of his origin career, regardless of how good he is.

Untweak your twisted nipples there toots.

I'm going to comment on the Churchill Medal winner later this year, and if you can get your brain around this, I haven't won one of those either.

Try googling "Internet forum" and get back to me you frilly knickered jizz-pit.

Go back and look at your own post for someone with twisted nipples.
Comment all you like and be as much of an armchair expert as everyone else here (me included), but to basically say that being honest is for losers....

That's loser talk......just admit it.

Having a go is the Australian way.

Not hiding, bent over in a corner somewhere, afraid to come out because of what some dickheads said about you years ago

Being a loser would be saying you're up for the game and playing like you should have retired from rep footy.

So being a loser is having a go but not succeeding......it that it?

FMD......you have NFI!!
You know what I mean you argumentative dick or maybe you don't.
I'm saying that if he told selectors he wanted to play but wasn't really up for it, then consequently played like shit that would make him a loser.
Sorry I'll spell it out for you more clearly next time.
