Why is perth bid so secretive?!

Having another team in Melbourne in the next decade, doesn't make any sense and would be a low priorty.

Having a Sydney team thats been dead for 25 years move there makes even less sense.

Having one that is a feeder club to the existing Melbourne team, move there is off the charts non-sensical.
Having a PNG team in Cairns is also non-sensical, yet here we are...
How would you introduce a 2nd vic team? If it hypothetically was to be done

Agreed, its worse then non-sensical its the worst idea ever.

I shouldn't be on the radar until the NRL has exhausted all current expansion options AND the Storm are averaging 25k+ for a few seasons.

Hypothetically, you would create something that resonated with Victorians not try to revive a long dead Sydney brand, that has zero recognition in Melbourne. Examples could be something geographic, SE Melbourne, West Melbourne or even Geelong.

Regardless, for mine its no earlier than 2043 at best.

Melb2 is a pipedream in our lifetimes.

I reckon it could be PNG club 18 to grab the govt cash.
Firehawks will be kept in reserve for if and when the PNG cub falls over, they can be up and in on short notice.

then comes the big question, is NRL serious about 20 clubs?

If so Perth will be next as club 19, again hard to see NRL passing up on WA govt cash. Then possibly NZ2 for club 20, or if by some miracle PNG is working Firehawks.

I anticipate that is what the next 15 years of expansion will look like.

To be honest I dont understand this mentality. I think a new team in either area will probably manage to survive. I dont think either is going to be massively successful, but either option will actually grow the game instead of another Queensland team.

Id hope someone is looking at NZ2 in a few years. Thats not just good for the NRL, thats good for the world game. (as is PNG)

I lost faith in establishing a Perth-based NRL when I saw the AwFuL ratings for Perth. They were abysmal for a market that truly loves fumbleball. If their AwFuL clubs are averaging just 70-90k on FTA when they struggle then I don't see more than 10-15k watching an NRL club on that medium.

What really baffles me is the expansionists' desire to place a glass ceiling on RL in Queensland just so they can create unwanted teams in Adelaide and Perth. I suspect they worried about being teased by fumbleball fans for not having a national footprint. PR actually whinged about being teased at work for following a "two state game".

I find it very bizarre you care more about ch9 ratings than you do about growing the sport lol

When you have a market covered you don't build a store right next door. You look for new stores in new locations to attract new customers.

Its not that Firehawks couldnt be successful, but like the Bears they just arent needed.

Bears could do a job there the are feeding the storm in '24, if they are wanting so desperately for a licence, doing a reverse swans/bloods on Melbourne is a better idea than all the shit half arsed bids theyve come up with these past decade..
NRL would love to have a 2nd presence in Victoria
A second Melbourne team won't work because there's no demand for one. The Storm only average 16k at MRS with a team that sits in the top four of the premiership and has no juniors. Many of their fans adopted them as their second club behind their fumbleball team.

Adding a second team will jeopardise the Storm's model and create another Melbourne Heart/Western Utd scenario.

Would you build a vegetarian restaurant in a land full of carnivores?

I worry about Ch9 ratings because any drop in our viewing numbers will have a detrimental effect on future broadcast deals. We rely heavily on broadcast revenue to keep the clubs and players well remunerated. The last thing we can afford to do is jeopardise our main source of income.

What are the odds of the 17 clubs, NSWRL and QRL giving the ARLC their approval to invest in your long-term expansion model?

If you think Brisbane Tigers are no chance because they will encounter opposition from the Broncos, Dolphins and Titans then you must concede that there's a lower probability of all 17 clubs, NSWRL and QRL agreeing to a Perth-based team that will rely on funding and players from the heartland for generations.

You must be vehemently against PNG then, as it adds ZERO TV value

I would if I had confidence I had a product that could convert the carnivores, or at least those who were non binary on such matters!

Rating wont drop with the addition of a perth team, that's just nonsense.

Perth wont need anything extra than other clubs are getting, if it looks like it would, it shouldnt be allowed in. This isnt Port Moresby we are talking about!

Perth isnt a direct threat to any specific club. Brisbane 3 is a very clear threat to 4-5 clubs at least. Dolphins enticing away Broncos most talented players is all but the final nail in the Firehawks coffin.

You cannot buy intergenerational support. There are plenty of people in Perth who hate rugby league with a passion.

Who in Queensland will watch Perth vs Sydney?

Who in NSW will watch Perth vs Brisbane?

Unlike the Storm, a Perth-based club won't have a massive fanbase in SEQ watching all of their games.

Didn't you ask for an extra $2m for junior development?

The Dolphins' entry was contingent on funding development in their catchment and providing a $50m bank guarantee.

Can a Perth-based club provide this level of funding from day one?

Perth will be a direct threat to all clubs because it'll be sourcing its players from Queensland, NSW and NZ. It will place more strain on the Storm than any other club. The last thing the ARLC will want is a club that threatens the Storm.

I’m sure there is, there’s dckheads everywhere, can’t say in 23 years I’ve directly ever heard any animosity to rl though.

why do people in qlnd watch canberra v souths? Why do people in nsw watch cowboys v storm? What a stupid argument lol

arlc doing its job and investing on participation isnt the same as nrl having to fund an nrl club extra. Perth nrl club won’t nEd extra funding, if arlc want to see participation in perth grow it will need to up its game.

lol it was alleged, and never conformed that it was a $10mill guarantee for 5 years, can perth offer that, well the wa govt could easily.

clubs won’t mind risk of losing one or two players, happens every seasons, storm didnt oppose dolphins. Broncos seeing two, maybe three, star players in one year go to dolphins means firehawks are dead in the water,

I've never heard a Western Australian say anything positive about rugby league.

Pretending Perth won't have trouble generating ratings in Brisbane doesn't make it true.

You've seen the viewing trends from Brisbane.

When there's no Queensland team involved the average is 98k. When the Dolphins play it's 126k. When the Cowboys and Titans play it's 134k. When the Broncos play it is 170k. Not all teams are followed equally in Brisbane. Melbourne have a strong fanbase in SEQ due to their history. Queenslanders don't care for Perth.

The new club will be required to have a $10 million bank guarantee per annum over the next five years to prove it is sustainable, with no additional handouts from head office.

Has the WA Gov committed to offering $50m?

It has spent very little on PRS. You can bet your arse the Eagles, Dockers and WAFA will kick up a stink about any money given to an NRL team.

This is just a bullshit opinion. It's like saying News Ltd would never give more money to fumbleball after AwFuL poached Hunt and Folau from the Broncos to promote Suns and Giants.

If Broncos get the final say on expansion then why didn't they oppose the Dolphins?

A $10M bank guarantee for 5 years, isn't $50M, it's one $10M BG that the bank goes guarantor on.

If a new NRL club can't get the bank to guarantee $10M then they shouldn't be in the comp.

The reality is $10M is nothing in the context of an NRL club, and 5 years is such an arbitrary figure, what if the go bust in year 6?

Nah a $10m bank guarantee is proof a club will be rich and successful

So it’s a $10mill guarantee, allegedly, not $50mill. Good we cleared that up. Would givt offer that guarantee? Who knows, would the rich businessmen bidding be able to put up that surety, who knows, is nrl demanding it of png or Perth, who knows.

I find indifference or ignorance rather than hostility to RL here, given no nrl club that isn’t surprising.

so you think we should abandon the game growing into new markets for 30k fta audience 12-15 times a year? Sheesh that’s a poor return for not growing the game

News ltd/broncos chose the dolphins a) as the least threat to their business and b) to get broncos off fta and drive ptv in a lower market for their ptv business in brisbane. Now seeing what’s it’s costing them in player poaching, firehawks have no chance if broncos have a say.
