Just saw Rudd mention it, it sounds like a feasibility study for a stadium in Rockhampton.

Govt to back NRL team for central Qld: PM

Date
July 16, 2013 - 6:55PM

AAP

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has thrown his support behind a new NRL team for central Queensland.

Mr Rudd told a community cabinet in Rockhampton on Tuesday night the federal government would put $500,000 towards a CQ NRL bid consortium's feasibility study into a new rugby league stadium for the town.

The new stadium is essential for the bid to be successful in the rugby league mad region.

"I have a pretty simple view about this myself - I think it's time central Queensland had a go," he told the almost 300-strong crowd to unanimous applause.

Mr Rudd said he expected the NRL would make a decision in 2014, with the team to take the field in 2016 if the bid is successful.

Money would be better spent helping NQ build a decent stadium. CQ has little hope of a NRL team IMO, smacks of pork barreling? Do you need to spend 1/2 mill to decide if you should build a stadium?

The $500,000 investment will go towards...?****** Strategic Planning Advice Report: $137,926?****** Business planning, cost estimates, 3D visuals: $41,000?****** Additional services, site evaluation (five potential sites) $35,000?****** Stadium Architectural Concept Design: $71,518?****** Stadium Architectural Schematic Concept: $214,556

Yes it does need to be spent. If they didnt spend this money to determine its feasibility then how would they know if it will be woth the 20+ mil they will be spending on the stadium.
Good move!

And your opinion isnt an alternative to a proper investigation into the matter.

Cheers CQ, fingers crossed it gets the funding from The Q'land Govt, would be good to have a decent stadium there for NRL games to be taken to.

I cant think of a worse possible team to draw away crowds and tv revenue then the central qld nobodies.
Even the port moresby vipers would draw more.

CQ what is the realistic catchment population of rockhampton, ie within 1hrs drive? I know country people are used to travelling but it is highly doubtful you will get many being willing to do more than a two hour round trip regularly for a footy game.

God I can't stand that populist prick.

Makes my skin crawl.

I like Rudd but this does smack of buying votes in a state indifferent/hostile to he's party. Half a million on a stadium for an NRL team that doesn't exist, at a time when they can't balance their budget & racking up a huge bloody debt for us all to be paying off for years to come.

Take the $41,000 on visuals alone. Why bother? If CQ don't get accepted this round, but are accepted in the near future, whats the likelihood they'll be using visuals created 10, 15, 20 years ago.

Talk about counting your chickens before they hatch.

It'll be a community stadium and a big step up from Browne Park from the sounds of it, properly planned out.

Even if CQ don't get in Rocky still could really use a new stadium to attract NRL games/host concerts/etc. Look at how well Mackay is utilizing their stadium to grab NRL games despite having no intention of housing an NRL club.

These are big regional cities and the people shouldn't get ignored because they don't live in SEQ.

Not arguing the value of the stadium to the region; just the costs.

Hopefully what the study can do is lay out a feasable plan for a new stdium in Rockhampton that may start with a low cost communtiy stadium but have the ability to be developed in stages to one day host a CQ NRL team if the comp ever expands there. As said a 15,000 low cost community stadium to start with would be a big boost for the region on attracting events for the community to enjoy.

Keep it coming Ruddy. Bout time we were promised a bit more of our share (the massive amount of royalties and taxes both sides of government earn from cq in general). Needs the upgrade

Ps this effects the qcup club (bid) and seniors/juniors.. But shows even more funding promised

Good news, those metal seats in the grandstand are long overdue to be replaced. I wonder where the 3 story building will be going.

At a guess maybe remove the current old amenities and small commentators box and put it in that area. Also thinking if it would include new change rooms for players (not the ones under main grandstand but the side one normally for seniors/juniors)

Overseas at so can't buy the paper, but hopefully it will be online today explaining in full.

My Nomination (with norths bias) for names for new building "Jim Markee and Bluey Sears"... Sears played 1-2 for qld but was involved with norths for 60 odd years. Likewise a long time for Jim but he was across the board as would have raised a phenomenal amount if money for norths, Ricky rl, cq and schoolboys just on doubles....

DREAMS of watching a live NRL match are closer to reality for Central Queensland rugby league fans.

Central Queensland Capras CEO Denis Keeffe joined Minister for Regional Australia Catherine King yesterday to announce a $1.6 million contribution from the Federal Government to upgrade Browne Park in Rockhampton.

Keeffe said the upgrade, which included building a three-story building to house a canteen, corporate facilities and media and broadcast facilities, would help Rockhampton's case for hosting an NRL fixture in 2014.

"We've got to find a way to make the capacity here as close to 10,000 as possible, and this will help," he said.

"We will be able to go to the NRL and say we've got proper change rooms here, we've got media and corporate facilities.

"This is the first step in getting an NRL game here.

"I want them to play an NRL game here next year, which is in planning.

"We've already had some interest from the NRL and we've had some interest from NRL clubs too."

The Browne Park Trust has pledged $200,000 to the planning stages of the project.
