Why would a billion dollar organisation act this way?

Billion dollar contract. Massive surpluses as far as the eye can see. And it leads to this? This is a non profit organisation. The NRL is meant to operate for the good of all who love rugby league. And someone who has given to the game more than he has ever taken has been treated like this without any apparent reason.

BunnieMan, with the blinkers on.....

Youre right to say that this in a Not-for-Profit, but that doesnt mean they just hand out wads of cash to every sob story. Giving this bloke the contract again could have lost the League $20k or something, $20k that then doesnt go on to fund the grassroots.

So cry me a f*cking river BM, if NFP dont make these calculated business decesions then their revenue goes to shit and they cant help the people they are actually supposed to. This guy got 20 years from the NRL, be grateful for that...

But the NRL quote doesn't even talk about cost. They mention quality when nobody has ever complained about the quality of the rings, and he's apparently good enough to keep making the 300 club rings but not the premiership rings.

And if it is about money, will a random business do as much extra stuff above and beyond like he has for many years?

That is the problem when everything becomes about having a dollar value. Accountants don't put value on things like passion, and all the things he has done over the years.

Isn't it also good governance to be open and accountable and explain clearly how and why you make decisions?

how is it possible to complain about quality when one person has had a monopoly on the rings since its inception?

Bsides, I think medals is better than rings. Rings are just a piece of American wankery that's infiltrated our game.

Without explanation. He hadn't been told anything was wrong with price or quality so he never got a chance to fix things if anything was a problem. For all his services to league he should have been given a proper chance. Not just an abstract tender with no real information.

Thats how tender works, you moron....

They put it to the market for all to bid, including this bloke. His offering was obviously insufficient to regain the rights.

If they had gone to him and said "X is offering $ for this standard, can you match it" the the ARLC would be guilty of anti-competitive behaviour.

Lol. The money wasn't taken from grassroots. They're putting 50 million in the bank every year. The next tv deal is estimated to double the current one. Increasing surpluses as far as the eye can see. There is no reason to give your brand negative publicity to save a fraction of one percent.

There wouldn't be negative publicity if idiots didn't fall for these ridiculous crisis stories in the terrorgraph! The NRL can contract whoever they want to make the rings, this guy doesn't have a mortgage on it. He has done well enough off the NRL over the years as it is!

This is a good move. All the NRL jewellery always looks so tacky, like something you'd buy out the back of a magazine.

Getting a proper jeweller to design some genuinely classy products is a good move

Also, since when is the NRL a not for profit organisation? Do they have that official status and not pay tax?

They are a for profit business

Pretty sure that all the profit the NRL gets goes back into the sport in some way or another

Well they are banking $30 million+ each year into a future fund right now so that's not true.

Besides which, not making a profit or investing your profits back in the business doesn't automatically qualify you as a not for profit organisation. Plenty of companies don't turn a profit or invest all their money in expansion for years on end. The ultimate goal of those companies is still to make money though.

The NFL I believe somehow managed to get not for profit status in the U.S., but I can't imagine any of the Aussie codes have it

Of course the NRL is not-for-profit, as is the AFL, they are tax exempt under sec 50-45 of tax assessment act 1997 as they exist solely for the encouragement, administration and development of a sport.

I thought the ARL would be not for profit while the NRL would be a for profit organisation? The NRL only exists for the development of the NRL after all

"According to an NRL spokesman, the league sought tenders for the 2015 and 2016 rings to deliver “the best quality product for the players."

The NRL went out to a professional business tender, he submitted a formal bid and lost. End of story.

Clearly the NRL was able to procure a better product/service for better overall value/cost.

FWIW, I think the old rings were of a pretty poor standard to some of the ones made in the USA for the NFL/NBA etc.

NRL was for profit under NewsLtd (one of the reasons why we got so little government funding).

Now it is NFP. We dont have shareholders (all revenue, beyond salaries, gets put back into the game) so we dont run profits, we run surpluses (like a government) that is then reinvested in some way.

So rewind 5 years or so.

The AFL puts out a tender for TV rights. They take the highest bid and get 1.2 billion

Some on here would argue that whilst the AFL did this, the NRL should have said to channel 9, hey...you've been broadcasting us for years. Let's just leave the current broadcast as the same, and you can just pay us what you paid last time eh? Cos we're friends

Or

The Nrl put out broadcast rights to tender. Channel 7 offer $2 billion. Gyngell gets high blood pressure and so the nrl offer it to 9 for less money because they don't want him in hospital.

I feel like I could get a Masters in Business reading this thread
