Wicks our Dave Taylor?

Saw an article in the Newcastle section of one of the Sunday papers quoting Rick Stone as saying we could use Wicks as an attacking prop out wide ala Dave Taylor.

The thing I like most about that is that Stone is thinking about new ways to use the players we have, and we may see some big variations next year.

That is the funniest thing I have read all day, and I've already taken a look at lolcats. Dave Taylor is about a hundred times the footballer Wicksy is. If that is the best we can come up with lets look harder towards 2011.

Very funny, but not quite as funny as imagining the tub of lard we have pretending to do half the sh*t that Dave Taylor does...

I don't think the idea is too bad...just that Wicks needs to fix just a 'few' things first before we start thinking about using his attacking abilities differently.

I think the only thing he has on Talyor is an once of speed, not even all that much more even, he doesnt have any ball skills if anything we should have him run a cutie kinda line Broncos style and hit the ball up hard and fast into smaller outside players.

The Taylor 'trick' of him running at the outside backs and drawing a lot of defenders before popping a pass to someone running off his hip would need more skill by the runner to be at the right place at the right time.
I hope Stone has the team working on that in the off season. Hard to do, but Taylor has shown you can split the defence wide open if you get it right.
It requires the prop to be big enough to run over the top of small backs, and Wicks should be up to that - just don't know about the well timed off load.

Wicks to me is a second rower in a front rowers body. Even smith used him out wide more often than not. So it isnt like this is a new thing. The problem with danny was, while he was on as a front rower running wide we lacked his work rate up the middle. Either play him as a back rower, in which case he needs to lose some more weight and greatly improve his lateral defence and fitness or he plays front row. I wouldnt have thought with Pato and Houston that we needed any more wide running big guys, but its worth a shot i guess.

Wicks has the talent, but he needs to get the fundementals right before anything else.

Needs to get in peak condition, needs a major attitude adjustment - by that I mean when he's on the field he's gotta be the main guy to put his hand up and say I'll get the team going forward and take responsibility.

I want to see him have at least a 10 hitup game for 100m early next year.

But yeh his defence is a huge concern. He can take the big boys on but the likes of Preston Campbell would rape him in defense.

Hmm... I think we all know he is not a workhorse type forward so we should let him play to his strengths and help him work on his impact and doing things differently than just running the ball up the middle.

Hopefully he'll be working on it in the real NRL next year I think a stint in the reggies rather then being a guarentee in our top 17, may help get rid of the laziness thats the most consistant part of his game.

Wicks will never get close to being anywhere near like our version of Taylor. Wicks doesn't have one attribute that could be compared to any that Taylor has. Wicks is up there with our dumbest buys.
