Widdop seeks release

This;
"The club has been in discussions with Gareth for a number of weeks concerning his future at the Dragons," Director of Rugby League Pathways and List Management Ian Millward said.
"We understand his circumstances and he understands ours, and this is something we plan on working through together."

So my question.
If no one asked for a release and it was all media beat up and always committed to the Dragons...why have the club and Millward being talking for number of weeks about it recently?...what was there to talk about and work through?..he has always said one day so what's new!
Sorry to labour the point but must get this smell out of my nose...happy now ;)
It’s crisis management.

His discussion was just exactly that - a discussion. He didn’t ask for a release or provide an end date. When it hit the media, it was news to him. Unfortunately the events that transpired have forced him to reconsider his position.

There is no doubt that he has been talking to the club about leaving for several weeks. How was this news to him? Whether he formally asked for a release or not does not change the fact that he signed a four year contract and is now not sure he wants to see it through.

I know that to be correct..

What has he reconsidered? To stay for 2019? To leave his contract early?

I am more upset with him staying for 2019 not so much about him leaving. When a players heart isn't in it there is no point stretching things out, for him or the club.

He’s actually been up front with the club about wanting to play in the UK for years - so the ‘several weeks’ thing is, as I’ve said, crisis management.

Trust has been broken and confidence lost which now has him second guessing.

It will all come out over time mate.
Never should have hit the fan the way it did IMHO.

Bottom line, his private discussions were compromised.

Will it come out though? The whole situation raises serious concerns in my mind. The grass isn’t always greener...

Sorry but unless there's alot more to it this explanation doesn't make sense. He's been saying he wanted to eventually play SL for years but several weeks ago the need arises for him to be up front and talk to the club about not finishing his current contract. Why is this crisis management from the club? How has trust been broken, if anything the clubs trust has been broken. He has signed a contract for four years which he doesn't want to honour. If there is some personal issue behind it, it has not been made public, so no trust broken. If there isn't a personal issue stop making excuses for him.

No one is indespensible, prefer he goes and a newer, tougher and superior model will be released, otherwise we would still be crying over many many others before GW

Not making excuses for him at all.
And yes, there are personal reasons that should remain personal.
I am not at liberty as at now to disclose those.
Suffice to say, whether or not people are fans of Widdop or not, this was poorly handled by within.

Look, let’s just say that the story that came out from his manager is the most accurate account of what’s happened. I’m not making excuses at all - just trying to highlight that the full story hasn’t been exposed and most likely won’t.

Sorry mate I have no idea re: Clune.

I made a post earlier this year that I thought that Adam Clune was a gun player in the ISP- bullet pass, speed, good vision- all the attributes that a good half should have- but someone said that he had just finished a law degree and was working and didn't want an NRL commitment. Had to take it at face value as I don't know any different.

We know Widdop has had a serious shoulder injury which will take time into next season to heal and may even then get reinjured. We also know he wants to go to SL in 2020. That means in 2019 he will probably not be 100% physically and the following year will leave.

Let him go now and free up about $1 million of salary cap, use this to buy a top class 5/8 if one is available or else accept next year will be a bit of a struggle year and spend the money from Widdop, what was there for Hayne and I suspect some extra on top of this, to buy the very best young players available and/or the best value top line first graders that become available. The balance of the team will suffer for 2019 but the base of a super team will be there. Use the increase in salary cap and move some players on and find the exact players needed for 2020 to enhance the team from 2019.

Comprised by who, his management? likely as he puts the feelers out there for him
Crisis management?. But apparently what crisis?...there was no crisis to manage!
All this debate we are having about the story, what is it and why, whats not being told etc...according to all these reports from the club, Widdop and his manager..........there is no story!..
Move on they say nothing's changed..
Unfortunately us NRL fans are smart enough to add 2 + 2..much to NRL clubs and the media's surprise

Well OK.. I move on...until we are told different

Ok mate, you have your view.

My posts in this matter are not based on media or innuendo. As respect, as I stated I am not at liberty at this stage to disclose my info. You believe what you want. I am 100% certain of what i have said, and it doesn't reflect well on those at the club.

There is a story here, whether you like it or not.

Mark Riddell says St George Illawarra should trade Gareth Widdop for Wigan's George Williams

Could the Dragons swap one English international playmaker for another?

With the long-term future of St George Illawarra captain Gareth Widdop shrouded in doubt, former Dragons hooker Mark Riddell has urged the club to pursue another English playmaker.

Reports surfaced on Wednesday morning stating a "homesick" Widdop wanted a release from the Dragons immediately to join the UK Super League.

Widdop has since denied the claims, ensuring he would wear the Red V in 2019, but the Halifax-born 29-year-old failed to confirm he will see out the final three years of his contract.

The international pivot would undoubtedly be a tough player to replace; he is St George Illawarra's main source of creativity in attack and an accurate goal-kicker.

However, Riddell believes he has identified the perfect man to fill Widdop's boots – Wigan Warriors five-eighth George Williams.

“I’ve been thinking about this about the whole Gareth Widdop situation. [The Dragons] should try and use it to their advantage," Riddell said on Macquarie Sports Radio.

"If he does want to go in 2020 or 2021, they should try and do a player swap deal with one of the English Super League clubs and try and get someone out here. And I've already pinpointed who.

"There’s a number six who plays for the Wigan Warriors, his name's George Williams. He plays for England in the same role as well.

"I know he’s got a burning desire to come and play in the NRL."

Riddell says the Dragons should use Widdop as a bargaining chip to secure Williams without a large a transfer fee.

"If I was the Dragons, I’d be approaching the Wigan Warriors and saying ‘How about we do some sort of a player swap: [we get] George Williams and we’ll give you Gareth Widdop’. Try and get something out of it," Riddell said.

“He is top notch. He’s one of those players over there that could come over here and do a really good job, and I know for a fact that he wants to come over here in the NRL.

"There are some halves that are going to be available [in Australia] but I’m just not sure whether they’re going to be quality. And [Williams] honestly sits up in that top quality of player.”

Williams has represented England in 10 games, the majority of those alongside Widdop. He impressed in the Poms' recent series victory over New Zealand.

The 24-year-old has already proven he can hande NRL-calibre opponents, producing a Man of the Match performance against the Cronulla Sharks in Wigan's 2017 World Club Challenge win.

He has been the subject of interest from various Australian clubs over the past few seasons.

Despite being signed with Wigan until the end of 2020, Williams told NRL.com in August that it's his "dream" to play in the NRL.

“If there was an opportunity that came up, that was more than just interest, I would like to pursue that," he said.

And it's not only Riddell who is convinced Williams would succeed in an NRL environment.

Premiership-winning St George Illawarra half Jamie Soward tweeted his approval of Williams following England's Test win versus the Kiwis in October.

"I wish more of the Super League players would come test themselves in their prime. [George] Williams would be great in NRL," Soward wrote.

Not a bad idea IMO

Couldn't agree more re: Clune, every televised ISP game I have seen he has been much more impressive than Field.
