Confirmed (media release): Eels sign Will Hopoate on two-year deal from 2014

by Rugby League Week on Wednesday, October 5, 2011 at 4:50pm

Manly Sea Eagles and NSW Blues representative William Hopoate will rejoin the NRL in a Blue and Gold jersey in 2014 after signing a two year deal with the Pirtek Parramatta Eels today.

One of the game’s most exciting young players, Hopoate, 19, will embark on a two year religious mission in Queensland later this year before joining the Eels squad for pre-season training in November 2013.

Hopoate’s signing has again highlighted the Eels’ recruitment and retention strategy under head coach Stephen Kearney and recruitment manager Peter Nolan.

The Eels will welcome Chris Sandow, Willie and Esi Tonga, Ben Roberts and Taulima Toutai among other players for next season, while the futures of young talents such as Jacob Loko, Mitchell Allgood, Taniela Lasalo and Pat O’Hanlon have also been secured.

“A player of Will’s calibre coming to the club is a tremendous endorsement of where we’re heading,” Eels chief executive officer Paul Osborne said today.

“He’s an unbelievable talent and at just 19, he will join us as a 21 year old ready to enter the prime of his career.

“We’ve got no doubt Will has the ability to return from his mission and become one of the game’s premier players.

“The fact he’s committed to us this far ahead of time shows the confidence he has in what we’re building here.”

Osborne singled out Tyran Smith of SportsPlayer Management for his handling of the negotiation process.

“Tyran has been very professional and was always up front and honest from the outset,” Osborne said.

Osborne said Hopoate’s signing was further indication there were bright times ahead for the Pirtek Eels.

“We’ve got a coach that players want to play for and a playing group that is passionate about the Eels jersey – there’s certainly exciting times ahead.”

Well put it this way Hasler hasn't bagged hoppa at all...a big reason for hoppa to b back at manly was if Hasler was there....put it together if Hasler bad mouthed hoppa for jumping ship how would it look when he himself jumps to the doggies.

Suck shit manly

But honestly with the amount of young super stars at that club such as DCE, Foran, Williams, Lussaik and established guys such as the Stewart bros, Watmough and Lyon, how were they ever going to keep Hopoate????

Of all those guys only Foran is what you'd call a 'superstar'. The rest are just quality players.

Jamie Lyon's 30 in a couple of months and Hopoate would have been a perfect straight swap for him when he returned from mission.

Ossie said that the salary figures for Will are bollocks, but he doesn't say whether that is referring to the 800K figure, or the 500K figure as well.

DCE is now a premiership winning halfback and would command top dollar given how hard it is to get a decent halfback these days. He'd be worth a lot more than Sandow would be on the open market.

Of course he wouldn't. That would just be plain stupid and unprofessional of a CEO.

They're the same age and put up similar stats this year. The difference is Sandow kicks goals (well) and defends poorly.

That means they're exactly on a par as far as value goes.

The premiership doesn't make Cherry-Evans more valuable than Sandow; it makes Cherry-Evans more valuable than he was before the premiership.

Otherwise you'd have to say Cherry-Evans is worth more than other non-Premiership winning halfbacks like Cooper Cronk, which is not the case.

Winning a premiership at halfback in your debut season is a huge accomplishment and we'd have to go back a few decades the last time that's happened right? That ups his value and Manly will be forced to pay big money to kep him because other clubs will be chasing hard no doubt.

And we have no idea how much of that figure is counted directly towards the salary cap.

because he is not playing for 2 years could the club be paying him some of that money over the next 2 seasons so to pay less when he starts playing?

I doubt the NRL would rubber stamp such a deal... hence why they're looking into the contract still before registering it.

Why are we signing god botherers? We paid way overs for a bloke that may come back in 2 years fat and over weight or with injuries. Bugging people at their houses talking mormon crap may result in injury.

Players heads need to be in the NRL playing good footy not bugging innocent people by knocking on peoples doors!

Whether he won the premiership or not, clubs would be after him because of the talent he has displayed.

The grand final is one extra game against a team who weren't even realistic contenders until the week after they were belted by the Broncos. Cherry-Evans' performance in that one game is irrelevent compared to the aggregate quality of his performances over the 27 NRL games he has played to date.

That's where his value comes from. Only fans care about labels like 'premiership winning halfback'. Because even guys like Brent Sherwin and Shane Perry fit those labels, whereas quality halves like Thurston, Cronk and Sandow do not.

You have no alternative but to change clubs then.

Can't argue with that. In fact I forget what we're arguing about completely. The fact he's won a premiership at halfback at such a young age means he's hot property and if he was available on the open market now all clubs needing a halfback would be in a bidding war. Manly will tie him down before that happens though. They always seem to apart from those that go on Mormon missions.

Cherry-Evans' value has definitely risen immensely from round 1 until now.

He is reportedly on $135k until the end of 2013 but Manly have already indicated they're going to upgrade him now (to about a million over 3 years) rather than get into a bidding war mid-2013.

If Souths were smart they would have done the same with Sandow well before this year, and if we're smart we'll do the same with Hayne, Sandow and whoever else we consider 'key' players. Probably as soon as we know the effects of the new tv deal on the salary cap.

That's if it's not automated in their existing contracts.

considering he has been chosen in the Kangaroo squad he will command a bit more then 1mil over 3 years. Hodgkinson is reportedly on 325K which is pretty much that so I would say DCE wlill probably command about 1.2 mil over 3 yrs (400k a year). On the open market he will probably get 450+ thrown at him esp by clubs like souths, broncos and titans. His manager will probably be aware of this and will trying to extort the most out of manly.
