World Cup embarrassment

To improve the game globally.

It's a nice fantasy but players throwing away a Kangaroos jersey (even if money isn't the main factor) is just never ever gonna happen. Nor should it really.

For better or for worse we're just going to have to work at it and wait and keep working, an professional quality international game isn't going to sprout up in the 4 years between world cups no matter what is done.

I fully agree.

My point wasn't "this should happen" moreso "this is the sort of extreme that has to happen to solve this problem quickly"

Yeah fair enough. The idea of solving it quickly/immediately is not a reasonable expectation and that seems to be what critics want, for RL to spawn an international game overnight. Only have to look at 2000 and 2008 to see how far we've come.
Enjoy and support what we have and better things will happen in the coming years and decades.

I've got to say that I absolutely love this world cup!
The blow out scores aren't a problem at all, it is a clear indication that some countries like Fiji, Tonga, Samoa,Png and Ireland are stepping up. I also thought France are doing ok, so what Aussies gave them a bit of a touch up but they went with them for a while and played some good footy. Lebanon are only doing well because of the heritage players but with some follow up work we will have them get better and maybe in 4 years we will see more playing the game in Lebanon and then we can find some talent there .
This is awesome! We now have a regular international event! One that countries around the world will want to be a part of!

The underperformed teams this year have been given a gauge for where they need to be.

This is no longer some side show where anything could happen. You need to be on your game!
Scotland has got the message and has sent a few boys packing.

You have to love the guys saying this thing is a joke bla bla..... mark my words. The AFL are absolutely green with envy. As are other code.

It is done.

Rugby League is now an international game!

My hope is that Perez is able to entice some Canadian Union players and even some lower CFL players to switch codes.

We would get a bunch of elite athletes who qualify for the Canadian team. They could give the big 3 a decent shake.

(If he can get a full Club to switch codes or even just a few Universities to run RL teams, it would be a big leap forward for RL)

It might be super hopeful, but i think (long term) Canada has the best chance to join the Big 3 as a WC contender.

Has Perez been here for the Cup? i'd have thought he'd be most interested …

Basketball has a World Cup?

Yes and it is utterly dominated by the USA (they've lost twice.........ever). It is still attracts global broadcast deals, global sponsorship deals and fill stadia. RL is not as popular as basketball but it is good to see a model for us that shows that it doesn't affect the growth of your sport internationally if one country dominates it.

Yep - AFL would love to be able to put on a show like this and RU (who can) would love the TV ratings that we get.

The only embarrassment I've felt so far was before Australia's first game, that poem or whatever it was.

What has grabbed me by the boo-boos is the passion in some of the teams. Fiji's hymn gets me every time, it's fantastic and the war dances/Haka/Sipi Taus from the other island teams are great theatre. You'd have to be made of stone to not get swept up in the atmosphere. Not forgetting PNG, their crowds are unbelievable.

I don't care about the blow-outs, they happen. I'm loving this World Cup.

An international game that is the envy of AFL and a domestic comp that is the envy of Union. Rugby League is in the sweet spot.

Other than Australia, no other country in the world cares that we have a bigger international game than the AFL. They are totally irrelevant in this.

What we need is more full time professional leagues around the world. Which ever country that's in, will be in the top tier of nations.

The race is on between France and North America.

We can't ignore spreading into other countries and growing the amateur competitions that will one day lead to professional leagues. The more local competitions we can start the bigger our case for Sport Accord recognition. RL seriously needs to sell it's tv deals worldwide both Super League and the NRL. So more people can find about the sport if we ever really want to go somewhere.

That pre game whatever it was a laughing stock and an embarrassment to all Australians the only thing better that night would have been to see an English victory. PNG are great, and need NRL team soon - they'd have to be next ahead of Perth unless they prove this weekend that they support RL.
