Wally going to the Gold Coast was horrible. But I guess he had to have control
He got punted from the Broncos mate...
I remember his last year at the Broncs when it all came out, and they were playing in the Semis at the SFS.. 1990 I think... He was out of favour, and on the bench coming back from injury (an arm I think) and the Broncs were getting towelled and apparent they'd get beaten and exit the comp..
The crowd started cheering for Wally... Cheering him to get a run... This - when for the term of his natural life all NSW fans despised Wally and his lineage all the way back to his ancestors for creating Wally.... Wally's a Wanker was sung more that the National Anthem in Sydney.. His mere presence would make us spit chips, extra salt & vinegar..
But cheer we did - and eventually when he got the call up and ran on - the crowd went nuts!
I still think about that a lot - why he was public enemy number one yet at that point, we all were his biggest fan. I actually think it was pure respect. Our venom was oddly in respect of his ability to turn us over, our cheering was respect for one of the greats of the game who's time had come.
Agree his time on the GC wasn't great. Actually quite sad to see. But not everyone, not even the greats get the fairytale finish to their careers on their own terms..
