Would an NRL owned stadium work in Sydney?

Here in Perth the WAFL own Subiaco Oval. West Coast and Fremantle pay the WAFL a significant sum (in the region of $2mill each) to use the ground. If the NRL built a purpose built RL stadium in the Western suburbs:
A) Would 4-5 Sydney teams play out of it
B) Would it be financially viable as going concern for the NRL and any investors
C) Would it be a solution to the current stadia situation in Sydney

Doubt it will ever happen with the NRL's lack of $'s and vision but worth a hypothetical!

Well, it depends.

I dont suppose you understand Sydney very much. We like our suburban grounds. Tigers fans love Leichardt, Eagles fans love Brookie and I love Parra.

If we built this NRL purpose built stadium, it probably wouldnt be welcomed very much by the fans. So there is one no.

Our clubs already have the option of playing at ANZ stadium because it gives great returns. Unless this new stadium can give just as good returns, the clubs arent going to do it. I also doubt that any of our clubs would be able to afford to pay the amounts required by the NRL as rent.

Also, I am curious as to what is the current "stadium situation" in Sydney. The only situation I am aware of is the crappyness of ANZ Stadium.

Also, we arent the AFL, they all play at huge stadiums because they get large crowds in comparison to the NRL. The AFL do it, but thats not what makes them successful.

I would love to see it happen but it never will (NRL don't have the money) + Clubs are to short sighted (Same as fans)... Suburban RL mentality is a curse on RL in Sydney... People say they LOVE suburban grounds YET places like leichhardt can only manage 13K on average this year (Only3 games played there a year), Campbelltown 15K... Parramatta Stadium 11K Cronulla 11K... Kogarah 16K... Win 12.5K... yeah Sydney people LOVE suburban stadiums ... Position on the competition ladder shouldn't be an excuse because lets face it only a handful of games are played at those stadiums so fans should be Jumping to go (Which they're not)... Rain is not an excuse; if you want a hill you should be willing to sit or stand there in the mud (You cannot have your cake and eat it too). More suburban ground averages Brooky 13K, Penrith Park 13.5K.

An SFS type stadium out west would be perfect... ANZ Stadium is a white elephant.

The AFL want to build an AFL stadium in Blacktown I believe and have an AFL team there. The NRL should beat them to the punch and build a proper Rugby League stadium in the same district and it should be owned by the NRL. We already have 2 major stadiums, one in the Eastern Suburbs (SFS) and of course at Olympic Park (ANZ), but if the NRL are serious about protecting their future, they have to fight fire with fire in this case and build a professional rugby league stadium in Western Sydney.

That is incorrect. The AFL threw a little money into a cricket/AFL ground at Blacktown Olympic Park. The majority of the money was provided by the NSW Government. This ground has a small grandstand with most of the seating around the parameter will be a grass mound. Most definitely not a stadium.

They don’t need to. The NRL use two excellent facilities on either side of Blacktown at Penrith and Parramatta. Western Weekender Stadium has a bigger grandstand than the AFL/Cricket Ground at Blacktown Olympic Park.

That is pure nonsense. If another AFL team plays in Sydney, it will play out of Homebush Bay, not Blacktown

The AFL get big crowds because they've pushed memberships hard and they play out of central, easy to get to stadiums. Look at their crowd averages before they centralised the home grounds in Melbourne, they weren't much different to what we're getting now...

so are EPL clubs short-sighted? every club in London is required to provide their own home ground, despite the FA owning Wembley Stadium. they sell out every game, even though tix are 50 quid minimum. Granted, the facilities of clubs in the EPL are much better than the NRL.

a league must retain a club's access to competitive advantages during the regular season which is incorporated in Home & Away matches. the significance must not be discounted. otherwise, it will end up in with the ridiculous situation as in the AFL where the advantage/disadvantage is restricted to matches featuring out of town teams. the NRL is already heading down this path with Homebush.

besides, the AFL is a manipulated farce. decisions are made to suit an agenda rather than in the spirit of competition. the Brisbane Lions (as Fitzroy they didnt win a premiership after 1944) and Sydney Swans (last won a premiership in 1933 prior to the 2005 gift from the AFL) won premierhips this decade through favourable concessions (and even a rigged tribunal decision in the case of Hall) in order develop the game in the 'northern markets'. the NRL is no better i guess.

I'm sorry mate i couldn't care less about "Home ground advantage"... I'd much prefer a crowd that is 50/50 and more then 12K. You got the typical NSWRL Short sighted view. Better yet let's all play out of Henson Park or Lidcombe Oval, let's go back to the glory days:roll:. NRL needs to grow there crowds NOT be happy with most Sydney teams averaging under 15K (Some lucky to get near 15K).

I dont know about that,

take the 1970 VFL season , the home and away crowd average was almost 22K.

Last year , it was almost 38K.

Imo the major reason for the increase in crowd numbers has been the increase in population. There are also 2 less teams in melbourne now than there were then.

I dont doubt that the membership drive & new stadiums have helped , afterall the victorian AFL teams are all mostly inner city teams. However my guess is the increase in crowds would be mainly due to population increases.

I'd support it,

I think teams like Bulldogs, Souths, Roosters, Tigers etc would use it

If it held 30,000. I'm sure people would like it.

If by some miracle it happens, It'll be the best thing RL could do in Australia... State of the art stadiums purposely built for RL/Soccer is needed to build crowds not Surburban dumps because let's not kid ourselves... Campbelltown, Kogarah, Leichhardt, Shark Park, Penrith Park & Brooky are dumps.

Yeah, Like what is happening in Melbourne, a stadium like that would be a dream come true.

Does anyone think it's a mere coincidence that the broncos get around 34,000+ every week from a centrally located, purpose built stadium that is close to transport facilities?
