I didn't think Stewart got within the 10.

Fear priority of the NRL needs to be putting control of the clock in the referee's hands ASAP instead of some local dumbass. I'm sure it is not difficult in today's world I have a siren remotely linked to a timepiece on the ref's wrist

This is a good point.

With all of these technological innovations they are talking about (ie. the video ref bunker; rigging some GPS system to the ball to judge forward passes etc) surely they can have the refs synched up to some clock to control it 100%.

The last try was fair incidentally. A tough loss for the Panthers but talk of refs, NRL wanting Manly to win is beyond ridiculous.

What interest for the NRL does it serve for Manly to win? Is tat the fairytale, bums on seats, capture the public's imagination that they think people want to see? I think not.

Lol f**king sooks. For one they check with both touchies for EVERY SINGLE TRY they are about to award if it is not going to the video ref, and secondly Brett Stewart didn't come near the 10m of play where Lyon caught the ball. Where is the thread on Taufua's try that was taken off us for an obstruction. What a load of shit.

Gud to see the refs making a decision by themselves, it was an open field play, they often give those without going to the video-ref; another reason to go to 12-a-side, one less player should mean less obstruction decisions going upstairs. Well if I say 2 less players, makes it sound better.

Also the NRL refs are good; I've watched a lot of European and American sports, they're good.

Manly at Brooky what do you expect, NRL got what they wanted today they f**king hate our club will do anything to bring us down. f**king dogs.

Yep, Manly were gifted everything all day. At 12-0 the penalty count was 4-0 to Penrith and Manly's first penalty was on the first tackle right next to the sideline (they must have gained about 5 meters and 0 tackles from it).

Why did the clock have to be stopped?

They don't stop it until the conversion has taken place. And because they didn't go to the video ref there was no reason to at all.

They brought in a rule this year that the clock gets stopped in the last 5 minutes when points are scored. That is how Melbourne had time to kick their second field goal in Round 2 remember?

Then Manly got the next 6.

I think there were a couple of dodgy calls in the latter stages. I'm not convinced Idris lost the ball before the second last try. And the last one should have gone upstairs as there were question marks on the offside and the contest for the ball that aren't resolved by what was shown on TV.

This is from NRL.com (on 26 Jan 2014)

Stop the clock: During the last five minutes of a match, the clock will stop following a conversion or penalty kick at goal until play restarts at halfway. The interpretation change will add excitement during close matches, provide consistency across matches and reduce potential time-wasting.

So I don't understand why a)Sowie was whinging yesterday before the conversion had been attempted and b) why the referee didn't set him straight about the rules.

Has there been a change in the rules since Jan??

I'd suggest you go and watch a replay. I was at the game and sitting at the northern end so had no idea what happened but when I went home and watched it on tv there is absolutely no question he dropped it and could be clearly seen pulling it back in.
