R69 I can understand going to an event for a perve (that's the only reason I bother to go to Sharks home games), but may I ask you, do you actually like the racing ITSELF (i.e watching horses gallop for a lap round a grass field while colourful oompah loompah's beat them with sticks?)
For instance, if we asked everyone on this forum why they liked League, I can almost certainly guarantee they'd say "the game". It wouldn't be "socialising" or "the chicks/ guys" or "having a punt". For me, that defines a sport- a physical game that is played and followed FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME ITSELF, not for what you can get out of it. That's the mistake Murdoch and his cronies made in the '90s.

Would cricket fall under this category?

If a person likes the game and the strategy, then yes. my late Grandmother loved the strategy of cricket, for one.

Do you follow athletics?? What is the difference. Horse Racing is very much as sport, and remember, it is 'The Sport of Kings'

I've always considered sport to be human beings vs. human beings.
I've never considered horse racing to be a sport, because it's up to how good the horse is. I've also never considered motor sport to be a sport, because it's machine vs. machine. It's about how big an engine a racing team can afford. There is the driving aspect though, but it's more about how fast the car (or whatever's racing) can go. That's all just my opinion.

While I'm at it, I, too, am not a fan of the Melbourne Cup. I only used to like it because at school, we got to stop doing work for about 10 minutes. Usually, we'd break early for lunch (3 hour time difference means in Perth, it's a 12noon start). I enjoyed that! Since then, I couldn't give a stuff. I haven't watched it for a few years. Last year, I didn't even know it'd been run until a couple of days later! I don't usually watch the news or read the paper, and I had a few days off from TAFE, and someone was discussing it. I'm sure I looked stupid, but I asked "When's the race on?". They just looked at me!

Unfortunately, I have to know a bit about it and have to watch it this year. I work in aged care, and I've gotta set up the lounge ready for a Melbourne Cup luncheon. Bah. I shan't be having a bet though ... that's a safe bet!

I'll tell you what I hate. I hate too-cool-for-school buzzkills who swear a lot. The Melbourne Cup day is a firmly entrenched Aussie cultural phenomenon - get over it ffs.

The Melbourne cup is boring.....and as pointed out by Nuke alot of people couldn't give a sh*t unless their is some benefit like getting time of work or school.

It's a painful 4 hours of watching celebrities wearing stupid clothes....prancing around like they'd know what bloodlines all the animals have & what prodgeny they could produce from the sire....it says it all....it's just a social thing horse racing....they wouldn't watch it anyother day of the year apart from some Tuesday coming up soon.

I hope it rains and alot of people loose money.

Ron, my suggestion would be to turn the TV offor find another channel....if you don't like it switch it off.

if there was no betting then horse racing would be dead, and thats a fact.
the same cant be said of other "sports" like , league, afl, union, basketball, socceretc.

Despite the fact that she won the Melbourne Cup for a third successive year today...
