Whilst lyrically they're certainly not Pink Floyd like, but they're not that bad. Plenty worse out there.
In my mind Labrie is one of the better singers, I certainly don't get the hate on his vocals.

I don't "hate" his vocals, but I don't listen to Dream Theater for their vocals. Seen them a few times live now, and he is a pretty poor live performer to boot. Saw them support Iron Maiden last year while I lived in Canada, and it was chalk and cheese in terms range, sound and performance. Some albums he's been amazing, like Train of Thought, then others have been very meh. Portnoy and Petrucci made that band, not Labrie.

For those Corey Taylor (slipknot, Stone Sour) fans and for anyone who is interested in a talented vocalist check these out. They are from a solo tour that Corey Taylor is doing across the states called an evening with corey taylor. He does about an hour of Q&A, a bit of stand up comedy (he is a really funny guy) he does a few stone sour and slipknot songs plus some covers. And for those of you that think slipknot are just a bunch of freaks who wear masks the links below may open your eyes a bit to what they are really like, well corey taylor anyway.

This is a country version of one of the heaviest slipknot songs "Spit it out" its brilliant. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=siVPzZTt8DU&feature=related If you dont know the song, i recommend you listen to the heavy version first (just youtube it)

This is Taylors cover he did of Elvis' hit Burning Love. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_NJBu1LW4Sw&feature=BFa&list=SPCA7B2D21C27A3424&lf=list_related

For those U2 fans, here is his cover of with or without you http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gk2-xOCJep0&feature=BFa&list=SPCA7B2D21C27A3424&lf=list_related

If you are a fan you should look at his entire show on youtube, absolutely brilliant. The guy is a pure musical genius, songwriter and guitarist.

A few of my favourites - Brandon Boyd, Josh Homme, Jack White, Dave Grohl and John Butler.

Amy Lee is a very good vocalist too. That girl can sing.

can't agree at all, i went to both DT's live performances at the Hordern thus far, and LaBrie was fine live. i'm not sticking up for LaBrie, he's not amongst my favourites at all, but i do think he's a technical brilliant singer... and to come back from ruptured vocal chords with the range he does have is pretty excellent imo. he does the job, and helps give the band their identity... i don't think he's out of place in this thread and i can see the appeal of his vocals.

i don't even agree with you about Portnoy and Petrucci making the band. Ruddess and Myung contribute a lot to the band and their sound, and they have just released one of their better albums without Portnoys influence at all. every member of that band is a master of their craft, and to take credit away from other members of the band is doing them a disservice.

i do agree with Corey Taylor and his talents, too. he was the voice of my teenage years. Serj Tankian is another nomination that i like, and would agree with. very interesting vocalist.

Rob Halford is my favourite vocalist ever, traditional heavy metal at its most epic and badass.
Dio and Dickinson rock. Hetfield not really in the same talent range as them but always enjoyable (Metallica being my favourite band).
Love Hansi Kursch (Blind Guardian) and James LaBrie too (don't get the hate).
Slightly less metal, I rate Chris Cornell and whoever the dude from Rise Against is.
