That’s precisely the attitude that enabled Garrick to slip away only to become a rampant point scorer. Sailor 3 games, Ford 5, Kerr 7, and Lomax 18 are all NRL infants. I’d like to see a bit more of them before casting them into the non-origin class bin. They need a decent crack at first grade to begin with. And that’s the chief point: Lomax presented better value than Aitken this season and should have been picked in front of him from round 1. Kerr could have easily seen more game/bench time ahead of Latimore at stages. Sailor was maybe worth a punt on the wing earlier in the season with our back three struggling to catch. In the midst of a four or five match losing funk when our forwards were offering bugger all, Ford scored four tries in a game in NSW Cup yet couldn’t make the cut of 21 the following week. That type of thing.

As far as memory serves, Garrick was rolled out for a trial (Charity Shield) in Mudgee at the start of 2018 and had a forgettable game after numerous defensive blunders. However his display was on par with any of Aitken’s showings in the past 18-24 months. To my knowledge that’s his one and only start in the red V. If he did get more game time than that it was not significant. That does not represent adequate opportunity for any promising kid who is a junior rep player. Frankly, Saints have reaped what they’ve sown in his case. You’d hate to think that history will continue to repeat but under the current leadership, that has happened with Robson, Timm, and possibly Kerr and Lomax. I also wonder what would have happened to Sailor and Ford if the club had not fallen out of contention for the finals so early, along with a significant late-season injury toll/player shortage. There is a clear problem with credible pathways under present management and to deny it while it goes unaddressed will lead to more departures that will sting.

Young players coming into first grade actually need to have their confidence raised and some individual coaching provided in the two weeks leading up to their game. Looks like Hasler knows what to do and Mary doesn't.

Lomax hauls 18 points in Junior Kangaroos' French thrashing

The star-studded Junior Kangaroos ripped apart a French side lacking top-flight experience in a 62-4 romp at WIN Stadium, Wollongong on Friday afternoon.

Fielding an "Australia A" team of NRL guns after the Junior Kangaroos age limit was changed from under-20s to 23s, the men in green and gold barely had to break out of a canter.

Campbell Graham bagged a hat-trick while man of the match Victor Radley, Zac Lomax and Ryan Papenhuyzen collected doubles in the curtain-raiser to the women's and men's Trans-Tasman Tests.

Lomax also booted five conversions for a personal haul of 18 points, with Reuben Garrick landing two goals as well.

Junior Kangaroos captain and Test hopeful David Fifita was forced to undergo a head injury assessment after being split open but returned in the second term having been taped up.

While France was classed as a senior team, most of their Super League talent didn't make the make the trip Down Under.

Australia kicked out on the full to start the match but that was the only time France had the upper hand as the heavy favourites soon clicked into gear.

Wearing the No.6, Kalyn Ponga produced the first of several try assists with a lovely short ball to Brian Kelly.

France were left with three players on the bench after hooker Charles Bouzinac succumbed to an arm injury in the seventh minute.

The tourists' pain was compounded when Junior Kangaroos lock Radley pounced on a Brodie Croft grubber to score and then powered in for his second try shortly afterwards.

Ponga next set up a rampaging Fifita before Papenhuyzen gleefully accepted a clever Corey Horsburgh offload to fly 70 metres to the line.

Lomax found try-scoring form with a quickfire brace before Papenhuyzen put an exclamation mark on the half to give Australia a 42-0 lead.

The onslaught continued when play resumed, Campbell Graham crossing twice in 10 minutes to push the Junior Kangaroos past a half-century.

Horsburgh nabbed a four-pointer before France finally troubled the scoreboard attendants through Mathieu Jussaume.

Interchange dynamo AJ Brimson sliced into the clear to provide Graham his third four-pointer to cap off the one-sided showing.

Zac Lomax eager to improve after challenging season

St George Illawarra centre Zac Lomax is confident Friday afternoon's Junior Kangaroos victory will help lay the platform for a successful 2020.

The 20-year-old endured a challenging season, with multiple injuries limiting Lomax to just 13 appearances for the Dragons.

Friday afternoon saw Lomax line up alongside the likes of Gerringong's Reuben Garrick, Kalyn Ponga and Ryan Papenhuyzen in Australia's clash with France.

Despite not playing since September 1, Lomax was impressive in the win and said he will take plenty of confidence into the upcoming pre-season.

"You can only gain confidence from that experience," Lomax said. "Being able to play outside guys like that, it's confidence boosting.

"If I can take a little bit out of their game back into my game, then hopefully I can learn a bit more during pre-season.

"Hopefully I can have a good pre-season and take a lot into the next season."

Can't really compare that opposition to a first grade side.

Zac needs to start showing he can handle playing against high quality, mature opposition. He has not.

Maybe a fresh start at the green machine will dedide if he's got it or not.

Most pleasing to see the young man show his wares against the French team . Not quite a top class international outfit , but nevertheless a good outing for the up and comers of the game . Yet again he has shown that the talent is there , he merely requires someone to bring it out.
