Why doesnt widdop take over kicking? Hes top 10
  1. Because he has just returned from injury an may not want the extra work just yet.
  2. Because we need to kick on both sides of the field.
  3. Because we need an alternate kicker in case Widdop is heavily marked.
  4. I'd say bring McInnes in also so we have 3 options.
  5. Maybe even Dugan for long kicks when we are stuck in our half.

He does. That's why he is top 10, but we need an option kicker or else we may as well just put another back rower in the 7 jumper, to just defend as it seems Mary is happy for McCrone to do.

Can't kick.
Cant pass.
Can't ball play.

Can tackle.

Sounds like a stock standard back rower to me.

It's very unlikely Nona will ever get a crack at FG, despite the success of the Cutters and the failure of the Dragons last year Nona was never considered

All last year Mary he stuck with Benji, this year with Mcrone, it won't happen

Thats where Mary falls , even last year he could have tried a few things when we were heading for a record breaking 7 straight loses he did a big zero .....

In fairness to Mary, it's very hard to make changes when you have your hands over your eyes, fingers & legs crossed and a set of rosery beads around your neck.

Heck, the poor guys' got enough in his plate without having to coach.

Can everyone please lay off him until he finds his feet.

I here 2020 will be a good year so settle you all!

McCrone has played more FG games than everyone on this forum combined. The Club knew his skill sets when they signed him. He is a fill in player and needs a dominant player beside him. Good luck to guy as he is off to Canada next year.. not a bad way to see out your rugby league career.

Watching two crap teams in Souths and coast.

However, this Souths forward Angus Crichton is a gun . And he doesn't appear to be covered in tattoos, so he would have a 'get out' clause in his contract
Imagine how effective Crichton would be playing reggies for us?
We could go back to back if we had him in the Illawarra jumper.

Indeed and good luck to him.

Meanwhile (back at the ranch) if we are fair dinkum about giving this year's comp a serious shake then surely we are better equipped with a half whose kicking ability would actually add immense value toward doing just that.

Just sayin'

Most likely but that doesn't mean as a tragic, I can't hope for the best possible option...

Crichton is an old Scots College boy; I'm surprised he's playing league but not so much he's tattoo-less.

Dragons Recruitment Update

The St George Illawarra Dragons have granted requests from forwards Tyrone McCarthy and Mose Masoe to be released from their current playing contracts to take up opportunities in England.

McCarthy played two NRL games during his two seasons at the Dragons, and not only captained the Illawarra side to Intrust Super Premiership and NRL State Championship success in 2016 but was also a member of the club's leadership group.

"Tyrone's been a very good club player for us and he was offered a contract to head back to the UK. We agreed that it was in his best interests to take up the longer-term deal," Millward said.

"So that means Tyrone will leave us and he'll go back to the Super League for the remainder of the year and beyond."

Masoe will also take up an opportunity overseas pending he receives the necessary clearance and registration to make the move to the United Kingdom.

While a season-ending ACL injury ruined Masoe's first season at the club last year, the 28-year-old Samoan international has featured prominently for Illawarra in 2017.

"Mose needs to get a visa but there's also a certain amount of games he must play and different criteria's related to playing football in England," Millward said.

"Mose's injury last year meant he hasn't been in a position to accumulate the games required – meaning if he doesn't leave now then he won't be able to qualify to play in the UK in 2018.

"He came and asked for an immediate release on compassionate grounds due to the offer in England, which would present him the opportunity to secure a contract for his family long-term."

Meanwhile, Millward said that winger Kalifa Faifai Loa has requested a release from the remainder of his Dragons contract and has also been given permission to negotiate a move overseas.

However the 26-year-old veteran is yet to sign a contract with another club and will remain at the Red V until he signs elsewhere.

"Kalifa's situation is very similar to Mose - he hasn't quite played the amount of games to play in the UK in 2018. However he's played an adequate enough games to secure a contract and a visa for the remainder of the season in the UK," Millward said.

"He's come to us seeking a release but at the moment he hasn't agreed to a deal with anyone. He has a couple of clubs interested and we've given him permission to go and negotiate with other clubs.

"If he finds another club then he will leave in the coming weeks."

Masoe and McCarthy's departures follow the early releases of Chris Lewis and Shaun Nona late last month.
